The American ideal was once the man who could play football, quote Shakespeare, understand Newton, appreciate architecture, debate Aristotle, and sing in church. Now we demand that 12-year-olds specialize in one sport and spend their adolescence building college résumés. We used to cultivate men. Now we manufacture applicants.

According to a little anecdote from director Gore Verbinsky, director of the first three "Pirates of the Caribbean" films Geoffrey Rush (better known as Captain Hector Barbossa) was aware of the fact that, in the Western world, viewers habitually follow a film by looking at the screen from left to right, just like books. In the scenes he always tried to stand on the left side of each frame to keep the audience's attention on his performance. His attempts increased in intensity during the scenes he shared with Keira Knightley and the monkey. The reason? According to the director, the answer was: "I'm sharing the frame with a beautiful actress and a very nice monkey... who would ever look at me?"

No, you stupid bastards, that doesn’t mean it’s SHORT. It means it’s CLEAR. You can understand it because the language isn’t overly complex, it isn’t too involved, and it is successful at depicting the idea. Some ideas take more words, but the language should always be clear.

A lot of male authors ask me for guidance. My first piece of career advice: Don't waste time with oldpub. Legacy publishers have said men are not their sort. So take them at their word, save yourself the frustration, and start earning by serving the readers they don't want.
If it’s all due to different gender choices when women lack representation, mentorship, or sympathetic leadership in a field than the same is true for men. Men by and large don’t read. Women dwarf them in this category. So why should men largely be determining what gets published?

As I continue to say ad nauseum: Stop believing what you see on social media. Life is just hard. Period. Build your fortune with your own blood, sweat, and tears. People want great stories!
Reports that men don't read are based on Nielsen BookScan, which doesn't count indie. Yet indie is 87% of the book industry. Men didn't stop reading books, they stopped reading oldpub.

Agreed. Wanted to add: Dracula, the Book, is a Gothic Horror Thriller about a group of heroes from all walks of life coming together to confront an immortal evil. An immortal evil who seems to specifically enjoy the corruption and enslavement of women. It's rare that you see Dracula, the character, portrayed as anything but a romantic and/or misunderstood character post the 90s. It is quite literally the poster child for Post-Modern Deconstruction since more people know about the Tragic Hero than the Cancerous Degenerate Monster.
“Dracula” is about overcoming the complete embodiment of evil and the complete inversion of God’s created order through the power of the cross. The archetype of the “vampire” is an inversion because he is undead rather than living, cannot be exposed to light, is parasitic rather than generative, and is often framed in the story as anti-Eucharistic. And spoiler alert, the good guys win. There are few stories more edifying for your soul than this classic horror novel.

Walter Koenig made Star Trek history w/his voice cameo in the 2023 series finale of "Picard." He didn't appear as Pavel Chekov; but rather President Anton Chekov, leader of the United Federation of Planets; the son of his original character. The name was a tribute to Anton Yelchin, who'd died in 2016 and had played Chekov in the JJ Abrams films. This made Walter the last of the original cast to appear in a Star Trek series.

Amazon's new subscription model promises more choice for readers. But for independent authors already struggling with falling sales, is this another step towards a future where books are consumed rather than bought? Link to our article below.

"Today, the Big Five publishers are staffed almost entirely by women. According to the most recent data, more than 70 percent of staffers are women. More than 70 percent of editors are women. Even 70 percent of all interns are women. At the executive level, more than 60 percent of leaders are women. In 2026, American publishing looks like lululemon."

‘Best seller of the year for Sony’ and ‘didn’t sell enough to make a profit’ both being true is a *fantastic* place for Sony to be… Budget bloat on its own has the potential to gut the entire industry, and it is far from the only problem facing AAA dev companies.
Sucker Punch just laid off 26 people. The studio behind Ghost of Tsushima and Ghost of Yotei is cutting staff despite Yotei reportedly being Sony’s best-selling PS5 game of 2026 so far. In an email to staff, Sucker Punch said: “After carefully observing the challenges in the market” and reviewing its needs for the next project, it had decided to make “staffing reductions.”
