Julia Roberts & Matthew Perry’s tragic love story: Julia Roberts told Friends producers she would guest star in the show under the condition she be included in Chandler Bing’s storyline. Hearing this, Perry sent her “three dozen red roses and the card read, ‘The only thing more exciting than the prospect of you doing the show is that I finally have an excuse to send you flowers.’” Roberts responded by sending him “lots and lots of bagels.” The two then embarked on what Perry calls a “three-month courtship” through daily faxes. “Three or four times a day I would sit by my fax machine and watch the piece of paper slowly revealing her next missive,” Perry writes. “I was so excited that some nights I would find myself out at some party sharing a flirtatious exchange with an attractive woman and cut the conversation short so I could race home and see if a new fax had arrived. Nine times out of ten, one had.” By the time they shot the Super Bowl episode, they were already a couple. But two months into the romance, Perry broke up with the actress. “Dating Julia Roberts had been too much for me. I had been constantly certain that she was going to break up with me. Why would she not? I was not enough; I could never be enough; I was broken, bent, unlovable,” he writes. “So instead of facing the inevitable agony of losing her, I broke up with the beautiful and brilliant Julia Roberts.” After their breakup, Matthew developed a dr*g addiction and although they’ve separated, Julia offered her help to him Matthew Perry has passed away on Julia Roberts’ birthday.

Marty has run the New York City Marathon every year since 1980 and finished his 43rd tonight as the last man across the line. He said it would be his final one his mind is still willing, but his body isn’t. A remarkable way to end the streak. Congratulations on 43 NYC Marathons, Marty. ❤️
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The runner’s name is James Thomas, not Marty. The person who filmed and spoke with him (@MickmickNYC) confirmed this. He is not the 90-year-old Marty Granoff (who ran his 6th NYC Marathon in 2026, last previously in 1983). Source: x.com/MickmickNYC/st…

Piers Morgan told a law student she was wasting her brain on OnlyFans. She told him she earns about double what he does. Then he asked what her future kids would think. "They can cry in a Ferrari." Piers spent the whole interview trying to make her regret it. She never stopped smiling. In the video below, he keeps pushing and she keeps winning. Her name is Elle Brooke. She was a law student at university in Southampton. She saw how much money other people were earning online and thought: I can do this too. So she dropped out. Piers tells her she obviously has a great brain. Why pack in a career as a lawyer? Her answer: she wouldn't have made much as a solicitor anyway. "I earned that in two weeks now." He asks how much she makes. She asks how much he makes. "Maybe, like, double that." She won't give a number. Only that she's in the top 0.01% of OnlyFans creators "in monetary terms." Then he tries family. Surely they're disappointed? "My dad is dead and my mum is on my payroll." Doing what? "Admin." Her mum doesn't brag about it at the pub, she says, but she's supportive. Piers warns her that some people watching will think she sounds awful. She shrugs: "With a little bit of good looks and hard work, you can become a millionaire." Even Piers admits it: "The bottom line is she's making millions doing what she enjoys doing." His last shot: in 15 years she'll tell him he was right. "I'll pick you up in my Bugatti." Here's what happened after. She later said that interview basically doubled her earnings. And in January 2024 she knocked out AJ Bunker in the third round to win the Misfits Boxing women's middleweight title. Piers thought he was watching a bright girl throw away a law career. She walked out with a viral clip, by her own account double the income, and within a year a title belt. The person asking the questions isn't always the one in control.

Gardner Minshew comes off the bench for the Arizona Cardinals today, the Cardinals down 24 to 10 in the 4th quarter and he goes and throws 3 TDs. Arizona win 33 to 30 in OT. In 7th grade Minshew and his dad taught themselves Mike Leach's air raid and ran it in flag football in Brandon, Mississippi. His mum Kim is a middle school maths teacher and played basketball at Mississippi State. His dad Flint is a contractor. College went completely sideways for him on four separate occasions. He committed to Troy and just didn't show up for a single game. Went to Northwest Mississippi Community College where the coach told him he probably wouldn't start and he got the job the very next week. Threw for 3,288 yards and won the JUCO national championship. He went to East Carolina, backed up, started and then had to share the job. By 2018 he had one year of eligibility remaining and had already decided how that was going to end. He was going to go to Alabama, spend a season with Nick Saban holding a clipboard and then go be a coach somewhere. Then the phone rang. It was Mike Leach at Washington State and Leach asked him if he wanted to come and lead the nation in passing. He went. Led the nation in passing at 397.6 yards per game, 4,776 yards and 38 TDs, won the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year and finished 5th in the Heisman voting. Go back a year to the night before the 2019 draft, which was a draft he wasn't in. He posted this. "365 days to prove why my name should be called." 365 days later he was drafted by Jacksonville in the 6th round (178th overall). Be absolutely clear about what's happened since, because that's the actual job. Minshew has been on the roster in Jacksonville, Philadelphia, Indianapolis, Las Vegas, Kansas City and now Arizona. He's started games for all of them bar one. He's never been the long term answer at any of them. He got absolutely brilliant at the other thing. Knowing the entire playbook without taking a single rep in it all week. Warming up in the 3rd quarter of a game where his team was losing by two scores, because someone had to be ready. Arizona released Kyler Murray in the offseason and picked up Minshew as a free agent. Brissett has been the guy taking the snaps. Minshew went in for Brissett today. 1st TD 5 yards to Allgeier at 10:52. 2nd TD 14 yards to McBride at 2:16. 3rd TD 13 yards to Wilson at 10 seconds, tied it. Chad Ryland then missed the extra point that would have won it, went out in OT and kicked a 42 yard field goal. Twenty years ago a kid in Mississippi was running Mike Leach's offense in flag football as his dad thought it looked like fun.

In 1984, Larry David marched up to his SNL producer five minutes before airtime and screamed, “You should be embarrassed. I’m embarrassed. I’m done. I’ve had it. I quit!” All season, Larry had watched his sketches get cut at the last minute. That night, when another one was chopped, Larry decided, “They’re fooling with the wrong guy.” So he unleashed on producer Dick Ebersol, who sat frozen, too stunned to speak. Larry stormed out into the freezing Manhattan night. For a few blocks, he felt invincible. “Well, that quickly wore off,” he admitted. He had just walked away from enough money to live on for eighteen months. By the time he reached his building, triumph had turned to dread. His neighbor Kenny Kramer spotted him. “How come you’re not at the show?” “I lost my temper,” Larry said. “They cut my sketch, I quit.” Then, quieter, “I’m an idiot.” Kramer suggested, “maybe you can just go back?” “Go back?” “Yeah. Pretend like it never happened. You’re an emotional person. People don’t take you seriously!” On Monday morning, Larry walked into the writers’ meeting and took his usual seat. Every head swiveled toward him. Nobody spoke. “I’m just sitting there, trying my best to act like nothing’s happened.” Ebersol began circling the table, collecting pitches, getting closer. “Larry?” “Yes.” A second passed. Then another. Ebersol only wanted an idea. Larry exhaled and pitched a sketch about a family of trapeze artists. He had un-quit his job. Four years later, @JerrySeinfeld invited Larry to help create a show for @NBC. When the script needed a neighbor, Larry described his neighbor Kramer who had saved his job, so they wrote him in. In 1991, Larry wrote an episode called “The Revenge,” where George screams “I quit!” at his boss and hears Jerry repeat Kramer’s advice: “Go back and pretend it never happened. You’re an emotional person. People don’t take you seriously.” After the table read, @IJasonAlexander, who played George, pulled Larry aside. “Larry, please help me with this because this would never happen to anybody, but if it did, nobody would react like this.” Larry replied: “I don’t know what you’re talking about, this happened to me and it’s exactly what I did!” “And that was when the bell went off in my head,” Alexander recalled. “He’s George.” By 1995, @SeinfeldTV was the No. 1 show on television. In 1998, 76 million people watched the finale, and decades later @netflix paid more than $500 million to stream the series worldwide. This August, Netflix renewed the deal for five more years, and Nielsen says 72 million Americans watched the show in just the first eight months of this year. Our most embarrassing moments often hold our best material. Share them with humility, and they may become our greatest asset. Cooper Pratt was a high school senior hoping to be a first-round pick in the 2023 MLB Draft. Instead, 181 players were chosen before the Milwaukee Brewers selected Pratt in the sixth round. Disappointed, Pratt considered going to college and was ready to enroll at Ole Miss. Eleven days after being drafted, he signed with the Brewers. In 2024, he was the Brewers' 10th-ranked prospect. In 2025, he was their 3rd-ranked prospect. In the 2026 Fall Classic, he hit .421 with 1 HR and 7 RBI and helped the Brewers win their first World Series championship.

Before Hollywood, I was living in a van in Hawaii and waiting tables at Bubba Gump Shrimp Company. One day, the incredible Rae Dawn Chong walked into the restaurant, and naturally, I went up to her table and said, “Hey, you’re a movie star! What are you doing here?” She asked if I could act, and I said, “Fuck yeah, put me in your movie!” She asked for my phone number. The only problem was I didn’t have one. So I gave her my buddy Mike’s number instead. A couple days later, Mike casually mentions, “Oh, by the way, someone called you.” ARE YOU KIDDING ME, MIKE?! I called her back, and sure enough, she was serious. I drove over to pick up the script, went back to Mike’s house, and read all 120 pages three times in a row. First script I’d ever read. My character's name was Devon, and I remember thinking, “Sweet! I could totally play a Devon!” I showed up to the audition with every line and inflection mapped out in pencil. Rae told me I could act and offered me the part. I asked if we were shooting in Hawaii. Nope. Los Angeles. I had about $60 to my name, a bag of clothes, and some rollerblades. Then Rae told me they'd fly me out. And I remember thinking right then and there, my life just changed forever. I'm going to be an actor. That little movie was Cursed Part 3, a low-budget horror comedy that opened the door to Hollywood for me. I'll forever be grateful to Rae for taking a chance on a kid working at a shrimp restaurant. Everybody starts somewhere, and this is where it all began for me.

William Contreras is the youngest of three boys (with older brothers Willmer and Willson). Their mother, Olga, worked as a school janitor; their father ran a small business with his brother. Both parents put in long hours, so the boys were supposed to be studying when they lived in Puerto Cabello, Venezuela. Instead, they slipped out to play. Real baseballs were out of reach, so they made them from wadded paper and tape and used a broomstick as a bat. Contreras later called those unsupervised afternoons “beautiful moments.” He was a middle infielder then, shortstop and second base, not a catcher. At 17, in February 2015, the Atlanta Braves signed him for a modest $10,000 and immediately moved him behind the plate. The position change stuck. He has said he loves catching because he is “in the middle of the field” and “the only person who has everybody in front of you.” That modest bonus and the forced switch turned out to be the pivot of his career. A later, more private story is his first reaction to the December 2022 trade that sent him from Atlanta to Milwaukee. He told his agent to “trade me back,” responded with something like “MILWAUKEE?! OK. Nobody talk to me,” and was so put off that he stopped speaking to the agent for a while. He has written that he barely understood what a trade meant at the time and that, as a Venezuelan kid coming from Atlanta, Milwaukee felt like a different world. Years later, he openly regrets the reaction. He has said the organization, the fans, and the baseball city won him over, that he “got lucky,” and that he hopes to spend his whole career there, especially after helping the Brewers reach and win the World Series. The paper-and-tape games and the initial “trade me back” moment are quieter than the All-Star selections, Silver Sluggers, or the 2026 World Series MVP, but they show how the path actually unfolded.
