In 2025, legendary singer Angelique Kidjo revealed she is a Yoruba from Oyo. This put an end to claims by some people that she's from Benin Republic.
She said in a recent interview, "My mum told me that I am from Iseyin because when my grandfather’s great great great great father came back from Brazil, they found their roots in Iseyin.
“From my mother’s side, we have always been from Nigeria. So we have families in Abeokuta, Ibadan, Lagos, everywhere, I have cousins I haven’t seen a million years that I miss a lot.
“It’s just that I love to sing. I love to bring Africa to the world. The beauty of Africa, not the music that people are very content about seeing and talking about.
"Africa is not about that because I grew up in a country that is poor, but people were very happy.
“The women of Africa are the backbone of this continent and they are beautiful. So, I want the world to see that," she said.

Nigeria has over 13,000MW of power plants on paper. The grid can only carry about 5,000MW to homes and factories. So more than half of the electricity we can already produce has nowhere to go.
Now the Minister of Power says the target is 70,000MW. Meanwhile, more than 300 containers of power equipment have been sitting at our own ports, and the government only just ordered them cleared.
To be fair, there's real movement. About ₦1.2 trillion of power sector debt has been paid, procurement has been approved for East and West super grids, and the plan is to lift transmission to 19,000MW in two
years.
But you can't talk about building a 70,000MW future when the equipment for today is stuck at Apapa.
We don't have a generation problem. We have a delivery problem.

Let's be honest. Every country has the right to protect itself from radical Islam.
That's not hatred. That's survival.
Most Muslims want peace. Some don't, and they say it openly.
A country that opens its doors to anyone who preaches violence isn't being kind. It's being careless with its own people, and with the peaceful Muslims who live there too.
Protect the many. Stop the few.
That's not Islamophobia. That's common sense.
