He had been living quietly in Izium, Ukraine since 2014 after moving there to be with his Ukrainian partner. When Russia invaded in 2022, Russian soldiers seized him from his home on April 2. They later convicted him in a closed Moscow trial of being a “mercenary” for Ukraine and sentenced him to nearly seven years. His family and the U.S. government say he was never a fighter just a civilian teacher. The State Department has officially designated him wrongfully detained. He has now spent more than four years in Russian captivity, including time in the notorious Mordovia prison system. None of us can possibly imagine what this poor man has been through.
