CF Industries sold less nitrogen in the second quarter than a year earlier and made 88 percent more money doing it. $727 million net earnings against $386 million. Volume fell, price rose. On October 22, Vice President JD Vance and Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins named eight projects for $573 million in proposed USDA money under FIELDS, 22 sites, 16 states. USDA's analysis says the projects add 1.08 million tons of annual capacity by 2028, lift domestic nitrogen production 3.7 percent, and cut nitrogen prices 4.4 percent. That arithmetic only works where price follows supply. Four companies hold 77 percent of North American nitrogen capacity. CF alone runs near 10.5 million tons, ten times what this adds. Farm Action pairs it with SPUR, $5 billion in loan guarantees for independent meat processors, 90 percent of the loan, $175 million per borrower. USDA's program page still calls that money pending congressional approval. The Federal Register notice opened applications on October 27. Four packers handle about 85 percent of US beef. Four firms make most of the nitrogen. Both build small competitors under the concentrated end and leave the price where the firms set it.

The nitrogen is priced before the calf is born. Four packers set the price at the gate. Pounds of gain is what a rancher still controls. Huntley Ranch ran 227 steers on tubs against 228 and reported 16 more pounds in 45 days. That gain is what BetterFedFoods.com is for.

Three hundred chickens. That is what the woods took off this place this year. The crows put a lookout in the tree and talk to each other. Then two or three dive in and kill the chicks. Coyotes took two lambs, and we put Mama Cheep and her twins in a pen because they would not leave the pasture alone. Mel has been changing the scarecrow's clothes every day because the crows figure him out. So the chickens go behind wire this winter, and there will be fewer of them. I would rather tell you that straight than pretend the flock is fine. January beef shares are open and the pork and lamb are in the freezer, but chicken is the one I cannot promise. Kenny Burdine looked at 37.8 percent and did not see a rebuild. "I don't think a 37.8 percent number points to widespread heifer retention." That is the University of Kentucky economist on Brownfield. Heifers are 37.8 percent of cattle on feed, up from 37.4 in July and down from 38.1 a year ago. When the herd was actually growing, he said, that number sat in the low 30s. "The truth is, of course, we're holding back some heifers. We always are. The question is, are we holding back enough to actually move cattle inventory?" His other number: cow slaughter in 2026 looks like it lands below 8 percent of the cow herd. Cows being kept is not the same thing as a rebuild.

Lula won Brazil's presidency Sunday with 64,256,232 votes, 51.79 percent. Flรกvio Bolsonaro took 59,826,041, rejected the result and has not conceded. ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ BeefMaps.com JBS USA is one of four packers that slaughter 81 to 85 percent of US fed cattle. Its parent, JBS N.V., is domiciled in the Netherlands and lists on the NYSE. J&F Investimentos, the Batista family holding, reported 536,076,699 shares in August 2025, about 48 percent of the economics, and controls about 85 percent of the votes. Class B shares carry ten votes, Class A one. Brazil's state development bank is a shareholder. BNDESPar reported 199,288,206 JBS shares on June 30, 18.65 percent of shares outstanding. Reuters reported in May that JBS co-owner Joesley Batista helped broker Lula's meeting with Trump. On August 26 the White House added 300,000 metric tons of lean beef trim at the in-quota rate for 2026, in three tranches from September 1. Brazil shipped 3.50 million metric tons of beef in 2025. The US took 271,800 of it and paid 1.64 billion dollars. That trim goes into ground beef, the same product a rancher's cull cow goes into. JBS reports third quarter results November 9, call November 10.

46 yearling bulls at Huntley Ranch in Winston, Montana, best results in 65 years. Brazilian trim lands at the in-quota rate and competes with every cull cow you sell. The bull battery still gets decided in your own corral. Settling rate is the lever BetterFedFoods.com moves.

September feedlot placements came in at 1.78 million head, 88 percent of a year earlier and down 12 percent. The lowest September since USDA's Cattle on Feed series started in 1996. Marketings were 1.524 million head, 93.4 percent of last September. Also the lowest September on record. Cattle on feed on October 1 was 11.372 million head, 99.6 percent of last October. Under 100 percent for the first time in years. Corbitt Wall went through the report on Monday's Feeder Flash and flagged the part the trade keeps missing. Those 11.372 million are not all beef animals on a feedlot clock. Beef on dairy calves go on feed as soon as they can eat, then stay past a year. "It's all about the pounds and nobody talks about fitting a box anymore," he said. So the inventory that is supposed to prove beef is plentiful is padded with a dairy cross crop that will not grade Choice. Heifers were 37.8 percent of the on feed count, 4.30 million head. No one is holding back replacement females. October feeder cattle still settled Friday at $348.32, up $4.70 on the week. @corbittwall @feederflash

The $8 billion Harvest Fuel Relief program was announced October 19 at a Park City, Kansas rally. It pays by planted acres. Above any one operation sits the payment limit, and in June USDA changed how it counts. 91 FR 32880, published June 2, treats an LLC, S corporation or partnership like a general partnership for payment limitation. The cap multiplies by the owners who qualify as actively engaged. The ARC and PLC cap is $164,000 per person. Jim Mundorf and Shad Sullivan took it apart on Lonesome Report. A Farm Journal clip argued payment limits keep a small farm small. Mundorf's answer was that the man was describing fraud. Sullivan's answer was a Colorado ranch split 13 ways inside one family, 13 LLCs, better than $800,000 a year in payments 20 years back. Farm Bureau's Zippy Duvall welcomed it. Texas row crop farmer Casey Kimbrell, same week: "They're not meant for you, they're meant for banks, equipment companies, fertilizer companies, seed companies, and other suppliers who line politicians pockets." Scott Irwin at Illinois ran the arithmetic. $10 an acre across 183.7 million corn and soybean acres is $1.8 billion. USDA is paying $8 billion. @LonesomeLands @jimmundorf

The names on the paperwork multiply. The ground does not. A ranch split into 13 entities still grows one calf crop. NBO3 reports +50 lb weaning weight and soil biology up 517 percent. Getting that off the acres you already run is what BetterFedFoods.com is for.

A payment limit written per member is a limit written to be multiplied. One name on the deed collects one. Thirteen LLCs collect thirteen. Ranchers do not get a structure. They get the ground and the herd. ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ BeefMaps.com

Vice President JD Vance in Topeka on Monday, campaigning for Sen. Roger Marshall: "The Department of Agriculture is announcing millions of dollars in new grants towards ten meatpacking facilities right here in the state of Kansas." ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ BeefMaps.com USDA's release puts the figure at $57,424,130: 147 tentative awards across 40 states under the Meat and Poultry Processing Expansion Program, pending Congressional allotment. It names no plant, no per-project amount, no disbursement date. Ten of the 147 are in Kansas, the state where the announcement was made. The average award works out to about $390,600. The Niche Meat Processor Assistance Network puts a 5,000 to 6,200 square foot USDA-inspected plant at $2 million to $2.4 million, so the average check covers under a fifth of one building. Private recipients must be independently owned and operated, and every recipient must be domestically owned, per USDA's eligibility rules. USDA says it has already awarded more than $200 million to independent processors under the program. Four-firm share of US steer and heifer slaughter: 85 percent in 2019, 82 percent in 2024, per USDA Packers and Stockyards reports.

A grant check is decided in Washington. A bred cow is decided on your own ground. NBO3 reports it has fed over one million head, with Kansas State University research behind the feed. The settled rate is the number BetterFedFoods.com is built to move.

Don Close does not expect the Mexican feeder flow to come back. "I do not think we will get back to that standard, a million to 1.2 million head a year." Before the border closed, that was the number. Crossings this year ran 43,000 to 45,000 head, and Pro Farmer put it near 41,000 through Oct. 16. What he will not put a date on is the recovery. "How much lower that will be is yet to be seen. But we have changed the infrastructure of that market." Columbus, New Mexico, reopens to Mexican cattle Monday. A reopened port and a shrunk feeder flow are not the same thing. For a cow-calf operator that is the whole supply question in one line: the calves you count on coming north may not come.
