Did a quick dive into the substance of Prime Minister @MarkJCarney's announcement today of Canada investing up to $1.6 billion in the Toronto-based AI lab, Cohere.
Sure, as usual, Carney got his earned media dumpster dive, but as for the announcement, there's no there there yet. It's all bluster, as usual. All theatre, razzle dazzle and flim flam.
Sure hope the pundits on programs like @PnPCBC and @CTV_PowerPlay expose another @MarkJCarney bull shit empty announcement all to give the false sense that Carney's doing 'something' about AI. He's not. He's pretending.
Even if the 'up to' comes true and the government invests $1.6 billion in Cohere, that's an under 4.5% stake at best. Meaning the federal government will have 0 say over Cohere's management decisions.
Today's announcement is just more Carney con.
Personally, if I was the Premier of Quebec I'd take a pass on the EU/Canada dinner, not because I would feel disrespected, but because I wouldn't want to spend an evening just being an extra in one of @MarkJCarney's earned-media grubbing political theatrical events.
Under @MarkJCarney, Canada is NOT open for business. It's up for sale.
The evidence is indisputable. @MarkJCarney wants as many of Canada's businesses as possible sold to foreign buyers. Carney wants Canada to become a branch plant of the world's largest corporations.
"Mark Carney is mirroring [President @realDonaldTrump] by radically centralizing power within his office and cabinet and taking a hatchet to dozens of laws protecting environmental, Indigenous and labour rights, all in order to enact his economic agenda."

Agreed. Carney has done a lot of disappointing things on the foreign front, but glad to see he did the right thing this time.
Very, very pleased to learn that @MarkJCarney's Canada voted "In Favour" of the "“Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States of America against Cuba”.
Kudos to Carney for not--as he usually does--caving to @realDonaldTrump.
Some countries did cave to the US and abstained.
Just because @MarkJCarney and Canadians can't fix all the world's evils, that's no reason why the Canadian government can't do all it can to end Israel's and the Israeli people's genocide on the Palestinian people.
Canada, when Brian Mulroney was Prime Minister, was the global leader in the efforts to end South Africa's Apartheid. Canada was one of Nelson Mandela's early international destinations following his release, and that his visit recognized Canada's important role in opposing apartheid.
Canada, if @MarkJCarney could find the political and moral courage, could lead the efforts to protect the Palestinians and stop the Israeli people's genocide.

“Nobody is running against the genocide.”
@mehdirhasan and @NaomiAKlein discuss the Israeli elections and why no matter who wins the election, ending the genocide isn’t on the ballot.

Adding to my growing disappointments in @MarkJCarney is his foolish, magical thinking that he can diversify Canada's exports and make policy that makes climate heating worse at the same time, and no one will notice.
Like Canadian Prime Ministers before him, Carney is continuing the policy of being a climate heating laggard and free rider.
Carney and his ministers seem too dim to realize that if Canada doesn't put a price on its carbon emissions other countries will.

"97% of Israeli Jews have supported the genocide, so this is a democratic genocide....
This is a jewish Zionist apartheid genocidal democracy"
The obvious that "saving the only planet we have makes good economic sense. There is, after all, no money to be made on a dead Earth. There may be costs involved now, but they are worth paying to protect our children from certain destruction" is something Prime Minister @MarkJCarney and his conservative @liberal_party reject.

To better understand the political vibe of voters, I check election results by how many people voted for the various options and how a proportional electoral system might have affected the outcome.
This approach seems to me to reveal that almost always what political pundits on programs like @PnPCBC and @CTV_PowerPlay are opining is (not intentionally) misleading people.
Seats won is bad metric for gauging voter intent.
On Saturday in BC, for example, the @Conservative_BC lost less than the @bcndp. The major win was an artifact of the First-Past-the-Post electoral system and certainly not an accurate representation of voter intent.
Post hoc ergo propter hoc means that until one of the major, reputable polling firms surveys people who voted for the @bcndp and @Dave_Eby in 2024 and not on Saturday 24 October we won't have a valid sense of why the @Conservative_BC now has a majority. When pundits say it's because Eby called an early election they're trafficking in fallacious post hoc 'reasoning'.

Daniel Levy | Former Israeli Peace Negotiator | US/Middle East Project (@USMEP):
Netanyahu did not alone commit genocide for 3 years. He did not alone maintain decades of illegal occupation. It was system-wide.
Eisenkot was part of it & served in the military. He sat in the emergency unity security cabinet after Oct. 7 - during the genocide.
Israeli generals, soldiers & judges - all part of a system-wide mobilization. Dissenting voices existed but remained marginal.
This is textbook, or should I say bible, @MarkJCarney. Always--yes, always--Carney puts the interests of big money and the people who have it over regular people like most Canadians.
Sure, corporations and their shareholders get better access to the EU if Carney gets his way, but it doesn't mean a nurse, teacher, actor, or pipefitter will.
