Congratulations to Joel Philpott and Khaya HealthTech for reaching the ๐๐๐ก๐๐ ๐ฅ๐ข๐จ๐ก๐ of The SAB Foundation's Disability Empowerment Awards!
The SAB Foundation (@sabfoundationsa) runs a callout for Social Innovation Awards as well as Disability Empowerment Awards.
Philpott put forward his impressive innovation, ๐๐ก๐ฆ๐ฃ๐ฌ๐ฅ๐ for the Disability Empowerment Awards, as sleep conditions disproportionately affect people with disabilities.
๐๐ก๐ฆ๐ฃ๐ฌ๐ฅ๐ represents a significant advancement by combining diagnostic and treatment functionality in one unit. Unlike traditional approaches requiring multiple hospital visits, ๐๐ก๐ฆ๐ฃ๐ฌ๐ฅ๐ enables patients to complete the entire process at home.
The diagnostic component monitors breathing effort, oxygen levels, and airflow, while the treatment component delivers precisely calibrated air pressure once parameters are established.
The SAB Foundation is an independent trust that annually invests millions of rands towards developing entrepreneurship in South Africa and the benefit of the wider South African community.
We're rooting for you and ๐๐ก๐ฆ๐ฃ๐ฌ๐ฅ๐, Joel!

A state of the art collaboration with @UCTMedTech joins the efforts of two landmark institutions as part of the 200 year anniversary of the Iziko South African Museum (ISAM/@Iziko_Museums), the oldest museum in the country.
Founded in 1825, ISAM has amassed vast multi-disciplinary collections comprising of more than 10 million objects while inspiring generations of South Africans and international visitors alike.
Michael Awood and Jonathan Oehley represent UCT MedTech in the collaboration: scanning and printing a selection of ISAM's artefacts, which were then 3-D printed and added to the celebratory display.
Offering another dimension to the experience of the showcase, and a testament to the technological dexterity of the tools of UCT MedTech, these printed objects allow museum visitors to have a direct engagement with the collection and puts its history in their hands.
It has been a great honour for the MedTech team to participate in Iziko's

Hereโs a sneak peek of the MedTech Masterplan Strategy Workshop, where key players are shaping the future of South Africaโs MedTech landscape. From visionary insights to groundbreaking strategies, this workshop paved the way for transformative change in healthcare.
๐๐๐ฒ ๐๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ฅ๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ญ๐ฌ:
- Mr. Vic Van Vuuren unveiled the SA MedTech Masterplan Implementation Strategy, which will redefine the MedTech future in South Africa. He spoke about the MedTech Masterplan been structured around four key pillars: creating an enabling regulatory environment, driving market growth through export opportunities and improved procurement processes (with a focus on local production), addressing skills gaps by leveraging the existing talent in the industry, and integrating current strengths rather than reinventing the wheel.
- Prof. @SudeshSivarasu delved into innovative solutions for real-world healthcare. He shed light on South Africa facing a significant health disparity, with the highest health incidence and the least expenditure, which can only be addressed through appropriate health technologies. While trends like wearables and medical robots are emerging, the country struggles with basic, day-to-day technologies, particularly medium-risk devices (Class B) due to regulatory gaps. This presents both a challenge and an opportunity to build a compelling market for future investors in health technology.
- Mr. Mark Brand provided an expert breakdown on Market Access, addressing key challenges. The focus is on enhancing market access in South Africa through reimbursement and health technology assessments (HTA). Companies should integrate these strategies for efficiency, avoiding excessive investment in resources like health economists. The goal is to ensure access to safe medical technologies.
- A dynamic panel discussion with leading voices in the industryโMr. Vic Van Vuuren, Prof. Sudesh Sivarasu, Mr. Mark Brand, Lindsay J. Curran, and Mladen Polutaโhighlighted how the Masterplan will revolutionize healthcare in South Africa. They drew focus on collaboration between industry bodies, academia, government, and the private sector is crucial for the growth of South Africaโs medical device industry, especially in the Western Cape. Additionally, fostering a culture of sharing ideasโwhile protecting intellectual propertyโis key to driving innovation and new solutions within the sector.
Are you excited to know more?ย Tell us in the comments below if you wish to watch the full video to see how these visionary strategies are set to revolutionize the South African healthcare landscape.
