Our new work reveals a pixelated light channeling in the prismatic shells of Pinna nobilis. This optical characteristic is attributed to the high refractive index of calcite along the optical axis of the prisms and the coverage of their interfaces by the low RI organic envelopes.
I 🩷 this paper! We show that the shells of 🐚Pinna Nobilis have unusual optical properties: each prism acts as an optical fiber guiding the light to the inner shell cavity by total internal reflection ⚡️ @shahrouzamini @bis_was_here @KyoohyunK @BM_MPICI @MPI_light @mpiib_berlin
