Over a million people in Uganda just downloaded Bitchat, a peer-to-peer private message app utilizing bluetooth and Nostr. No internet, phone number, or personal information required.
Why? Because elections are coming up, and citizens are worried the government will censor communications by shutting off the internet.
Unfortunately for the Uganda government, they can’t shut down Bitchat.
Here’s what opposition leader @HEBobiwine said:
“As we all know, the regime is plotting an internet shutdown in the coming days, like they have done in all previous elections. They switch off the internet in order to block communication and ensure that citizens do not organise, verify their election results and demand for accountability over the massive election theft.
Bitchat will enable you to communicate to thousands of people in record time. No internet connection is required. You will be able to send pictures of DR Forms and share any other critical information to specific or other users. No internet required. No sharing of phone numbers or email address. All you need to do is switch on blue tooth and use the app.”
Bitchat was built by @jack on iOS and converted to Android by @callebtc
Here’s a clip from my show on @RoxomTV where I covered Bitchat usage in Uganda.

Since Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro took power in 2013, the value of their currency has been devalued 99.9999999998% 🇻🇪
What used to buy a whole week of groceries for a family cannot even afford 1/100th of a pack of gum 🤯
Venezuela need #Bitcoin 🙌

Yes, this may be a difficult transition for #Venezuela ,
and above all, for its people.
But it’s also possible to imagine a brighter future.
One without ration cards, currency collapse, or economic suffocation.
That’s what we can hope for in a post-Maduro Venezuela: a country rebuilding itself, and potentially becoming the second nation after #ElSalvador to embrace #Bitcoin?
Hope is not naïve. It’s strategic.

Adam Back blocked me for publishing governance analysis.
Why? Because the data exposes what everyone pretends not to see:
Bitcoin Core operates through extreme power concentration. A handful of maintainers control the merge queue. They set their own rules. Review their own code. Answer to no one.
When Blockstream's CEO blocks you for analyzing public repository data, you know exactly what he's protecting.

🚨 Update your @BlockstreamJade!
➡️ Vulnerability exists in older firmware
➡️ No known malware exists
➡️ Malware would need to target your specific JADE model (3 models) and radio type (2 types)
➡️ Upgrade from a clean/new computer
➡️ Or factory reset, upgrade, then restore seed
🔐 @Blockstream released a @BlockstreamJade firmware update after a security disclosure, saying a vulnerability affects older versions and has not been exploited.

The European Commission lost the Chat Control 2.0 battle over access to end-to-end encrypted data. By the summer 2026, they will be back with their next attempt: Going Dark. This time some EU member states want to include VPN services.
The Going Dark initiative, or ProtectEU as the Commission now calls it, wants to “enable law enforcement authorities to access encrypted data in a lawful manner”. This is a Chat Control 3.0 attempt.
The EU Commission and several member states are also looking for new rules on data retention. In a new ”Presidency outcome paper”, the member states discuss metadata retention: which websites you visit, and who is communicating with whom, when and how often. The ambition is “to have the broadest possible scope of application” and this time some member states also want the proposal to include VPN services.
Mullvad has spent the last three years opposing Chat Control 2.0 – even though the law would have affected our business positively.
We will continue to fight Going Dark with full force, regardless of whether VPNs are included or not. If VPNs are included, and if Going Dark becomes law, we will never spy on our customers no matter what.
