I ended last year with a commitment to myself that I would more fully develop my voice, and use all the tools available to me to build connections with people. That led to, among other things, my new podcast, Marcus Whitney's Audio Universe buff.ly/2Df18L3

Holidays are great because of spending time with family. However, as the computer engineer in my family, holidays also mean I get asked to troubleshoot everyone's tech. I know most people lack a process for data backup. Read about my approach. 📸 @Satechi isaacaddae.com/data-protecti…

Equitable Sharing should be abolished at the federal level, as @ACLU, @NAACP, @IJ, and others have all asserted. But local jurisdictions don’t have to participate, and we shouldn’t.

In the wake of the success of @OversightNow and the work of @onearmyunited and @policingproject, there are clearly many more important conversations to be had about the interplay of policing and criminal justice on a local level.

If we abandon Equitable Sharing, I will be looking to replace the approximately $165,000/year in the @MNPDNashville budget to ensure that training and equipment are commensurate with the effort to fight the opioid epidemic.

We should remain committed to the effort to reduce the impact of the opioid crisis in Nashville and Tennessee, but we should do so on our own terms, not on the terms of an extremely volatile federal Justice Department, which has drifted away from an emerging bipartisan consensus.

Today, Nashville has a chance to voluntarily step away from a federal policy—Equitable Sharing—that has damaged communities across the country, and we should. I will be voting against RS2018-1486, which reauthorizes our participation in Equitable Sharing.

We’ve seen a lot of revised thinking since the 1980s after the impact of so much incarceration-driven “tough on crime” policies. It’s possible to drive down incarceration rates and crime rates simultaneously. We’ve been tough on people; not tough on crime.

Meanwhile, from 1980-1986, if you were born in 37208 (a lot of which is encompassed by District 19), you were more likely to wind up incarcerated as an adult than if you were born anywhere else in America.

In 1984, Congress passed the American Crime Control Act. It included a provision allowing the federal government to share proceeds from assets seized during joint investigations with local authorities.
