There was no "tax break for the banks". The 8% bank surcharge was created to offset the corporation tax cut from 28% to 20%.
So, when corporation tax then went up 5% to its current level, the surcharge went down 5%.
Not a tax break.

Manchester City cheated Premier League rules, the Commission found. Did it also cheat HMRC?
We've examined the decision and leaked Mancini documents. We think City likely failed to pay £12m in tax.
There should be a criminal investigation.

Scrapping VAT on energy bills is a mistake.
It's poorly targeted, fiscally reckless, will add further complexity to the tax system, and do very little to tackle the high cost of living.

Disappointed to see the VAT cut on domestic electricity - creates a more complex tax system; will be hard to undo the policy but no plans on how to fund it permanently.
