"It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it (or post it) and remove all doubt." - Mark Twain (seems relevant most days on this app… especially with medical news)

Statement by @mtosterholm @CIDRAP today in response to the White House Executive Order on childhood vaccines FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Aug. 10, 2026 Statement from Dr. Michael Osterholm, Executive Director, Vaccine Integrity Project, In Response to Today’s White House Executive Order on Vaccines Parents should continue to rely on the evidence-based immunization recommendations developed by trusted medical and public health experts, including the American Academy of Pediatrics. Today's Executive Order does not change the underlying scientific evidence supporting childhood immunization. That data has been built over decades - through large clinical trials, real-world effectiveness studies and continuous safety monitoring involving millions of children. Parents deserve clear, evidence-based guidance about how to protect their children, not competing recommendations issued through political processes. When families receive conflicting messages, confidence in vaccination suffers, and children ultimately bear the consequences. Today's Executive Order does not substitute the longstanding process through which vaccine recommendations have historically been developed - an independent, transparent evaluation of safety, effectiveness and disease burden by scientific experts. We encourage parents to discuss questions about vaccination with their pediatrician or other trusted healthcare provider and to continue following the evidence-based recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics and other leading medical societies.

It’s hard to explain and fathom the potential risks of AI designing and then building entirely new viruses In this new work, scientists created brand new viruses using AI. They say it’s ok bc they “only infect bacteria” Let’s be clear *IF* a new virus is released that could broadly destroy bacteria and IF it could spread well while doing so, the potential catastrophes to our ecosystems could be large. Viruses don’t need to directly infect humans to potentially destroy humans…though of course the new work shows how relatively well and relatively easy it will be to create new human viruses. The future is increasingly playing with fire. nytimes.com/2026/08/06/scien…

Sudden cardiac arrest in athletes may be attributable to cardiac and noncardiac causes. With diagnosis and treatment, a return to play may be reasonable. Prevention, emergency planning, and shared decision making are key. Learn more in the Review Article “Sudden Cardiac Arrest in Athletes” by Rachel Lampert, MD, and Kimberly G. No more dark afternoons in the winter. No more losing an hour of sleep every spring. RT if you agree that we should end the painfully inconvenient ritual of changing our clocks twice a year and make Daylight Saving Time permanent.

#DamarHamlin has a lot of good left to do in this world. CPR and early defibrillation hopefully saved him from his cardiac arrest. You can save a life, too. Sign up for a local CPR class. I would not have survived my arrest while on a jog without my wife’s early CPR.

Seeing/hearing this as well. Much still to learn about this virus, our immune response, the variants, and our tests. If someone in your family is positive and you have same sx but a neg test… play it safe. nytimes.com/2022/06/02/well/…

Testing is confusing for all of us. Omicron has a different timeline. I found this extremely helpful. Few nuggets: Rapid antigen is the best test for post-infection “clearance”. Might take a few days to be positive, symptoms might start before you are +.
Are at-home antigen tests the same as the rapid antigen tests you get at CVS? Are all the rapid tests equally reliable? @ASlavitt meets with @michaelmina_lab to answer your biggest testing questions. Listen: link.chtbl.com/InTheBubble?s…

Eye-opening thread and breakdown from one of our most trusted experts. 1% of US population likely being infected every day right now. Wow!
With Omicron, case counts in the US and many other countries have skyrocketed. The US 7-day average is now ~680k cases per day, or 0.2% of the population recorded as confirmed cases each day. 1/15

Healthcare colleagues, if you have not listened to @trvrb breakdown Omicron and the immunogenicity of COVID, please take the time to listen to this educational hour. I feel much more aware and informed locally and globally.
Is two doses "good enough" against #Omicron? Short answer: no. Find out why with @trvrb and @ASlavitt. Listen: link.chtbl.com/InTheBubble?s… #GetBoosted

Health-care workers aren't quitting because they can’t handle their jobs… before Covid-19 many of them struggled to bridge the gap between the noble ideals of their profession and the realities of its business. The pandemic simply pushed them past the limits of that compromise.
🚨During surges, much is written about healthcare workers burning out. But they often get by on adrenaline only to find, once ICUs are empty, that so are they. In the US, 1/5 have left. More plan too. I wrote about the hemorrhage happening right now. 1/ theatlantic.com/health/archi…
Some of my favorite graphs highlighting the duality of our healthcare finance reality. Docs get caught in the middle of the tug-of-war between productivity (ops/finance) and panel management (pop health) in most places these days with mixed environments. Things I ponder.
