A gentleman of German football.
I met Frank a couple of years ago and he was a delight. What he’s done with Heidenheim over the past two decades is remarkable.

Frank Schmidt will leave Heidenheim at the end of the season. The longest serving head coach in the history of German football finally steps away, having taken his club from the fifth tier to the Bundesliga.
A couple of years ago, I went to meet him for @TheAthleticFC and it was a great privilege. Free to read.

“Three promotions will lead to an idea that Parker will guarantee promotion, which is a myth in itself. Gary Rowett guaranteed survival, until he managed three teams in two seasons who were all relegated. These are lazy tropes that simplify football & management to a huge degree”

My grandad passed away a month before his 90th birthday earlier this year. His life revolved around football, playing, coaching, watching. His last years he wouldn't watch whole games, unable to follow them or keep engaged, but without fail he'd still watch MOTD, right to the end

Jack Grealish is allowed an endless free pass in terms of his behaviour in a way that others - like Paul Pogba, Raheem Sterling, Marcus Rashford & others - are never given. It isn't hard to figure out what the difference is.
Every time he goes on a bender, there is always a counter briefing coming about something he did. None of which is a bad thing, of course. It's just that the same grace is never given to others that is to him.
🚨 Jack Grealish not involved for Everton at Newcastle United tonight. #EFC attacker yet to regain fitness following omission from EFL Cup win over #NUFC last week after breach of club discipline. Unclear if 31yo returns v Coventry on Friday @TheAthleticFC nytimes.com/athletic/7738572…
