Waking up this morning in Atlanta, I’m appalled by what has unfolded since my original post about the shocking audio from the Learjet 60 crash in Florida yesterday. Missile strikes. DEI conspiracies. People inventing increasingly ludicrous explanations and presenting them as fact while investigators are barely beginning their work. The ignorance is staggering. But it’s the treatment of this young co-pilot, including by people purporting to be aviation professionals, that I find utterly sickening. Her gender, her fear and her final words have become ammunition for misogyny and ridicule. That’s wrong on so many levels. I hear a pilot facing something that would terrify any of us, still communicating with air traffic control until the final moments. Thousands of hours in a logbook, or our gender, don’t make us immune to fear, nor allow us to understand everything happening in that cockpit from a few radio calls. And now, even the measured voices asking for evidence, patience and compassion are themselves receiving hate. What has this platform become when even asking for basic human decency invites abuse. I expect better from our profession and humans in general. Seeing people who should know better join this grotesque pile-on leaves me deeply disappointed and disgusted. My heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of everyone lost. Behind every headline and recording are people whose lives have been shattered. They deserve compassion, dignity and answers. Not this.

If your VERY FIRST reaction to watching a horrific Learjet crash is “That looks fake,” “It was a missile,” or “Where’s the debris?” then congratulations. You’ve just identified yourself as the perfect mark for every conspiracy grifter on the internet. It’s the same breathtaking stupidity that gave us the 9/11 Pentagon “missile” and “missing debris” conspiracy theories. A horrific tragedy unfolds before your eyes, and before you know a single fact, your first instinct is to invent a conspiracy. STFU & GTFO! You’re not “just asking questions.” You’re broadcasting your ignorance, your gullibility, and your complete inability to distinguish evidence from bullshit. And the people exploiting these tragedies know EXACTLY who you are. They know how to manipulate you, outrage you, and keep you coming back for another helping of manufactured mystery. They turn human suffering into conspiracy content, and you eagerly spread it for them. You think you’re exposing a cover-up. You’re actually exposing how easily you can be played. The grifters have a product. You’re the customer.

Writing this in my personal capacity, but I have been flying these types of aircraft for more than 20 years, with over 8,000 hours, and have reasonable familiarity with how the charter world operates. I feel compelled to post after seeing commentary about the Lear 60 crash, from missile strikes to DEI to critiquing this poor woman’s final radio calls. That last part is what I find most troubling. She was the second-in-command (SIC), and while she was empowered to point out mistakes as part of good crew resource management, she was doing her job, communicating with ATC right to the end in a terrifying situation. She likely knew before many of those calls that she was going to die. I have heard final calls from friends, from military pilots with thousands of hours in fighter aircraft, and they are just as heartbreaking because they know the end is approaching. I understand the public interest given the footage and audio. But you do not know the aircraft’s maintenance history, whether there was a structural failure, if any failure was induced by turbulence, overspeed, or overcontrol, or everything happening in that cockpit. I am sure weather will be part of the investigation, but beyond that, it is speculation. The charter industry routinely hires commercial pilots very early in their careers to gain experience alongside an ATP-qualified captain before they move up to the airlines. She would still have the appropriate training, qualifications, and checkouts by an FAA examiner or designee. Let people investigate, learn, and share the facts. Be respectful to those who perished and the families who carry their memories. God bless them and their loved ones.

Let’s do a primer on in-flight ice accumulation, or “icing” for those not familiar. As you go up in altitude, the temperature & pressure decrease. It’s about 2°C per 1,000’, called the “standard lapse rate”. It varies locally, but we use this as our standard. So, even on a hot day on the surface at 90°F (32°C), you theoretically only need to climb 16,000’ to get to 32°F (0°C). Because of the way air flows over the surfaces of an airplane at speed, the outside air temperature is not equal to the temperature of the air as it hits the wing & such. Friction & compression heats the air as it hits the airplane; we measure this & call it the “Total Air Temperature” (TAT). The faster you go, the higher the TAT. Still, most jets can’t go fast enough at altitude to get the TAT above freezing. In fact, on the 737 at near max speed & a cruise altitude of 35,000’ or so, the TAT is still going to be around -40°C (it varies a lot, that’s just a guess). Now, clouds are just visible moisture. We all know what happens to water at those temperatures. An airplane passing through a bunch of frozen water is going to collect ice on it. There are different categories, types & intensities of icing. Structural icing is just the airplane flying through cold clouds; the ice collects on the airplane. It can be Rime icing, which is kind of milky in color & looks bubbly, Clear icing, which can be tough to see or a mix. In some rare scenarios, very large drops of water are supercooled & remain liquid until they contact the jet, then instantly freeze. While the other types of ice generally only collect on the leading edges of surfaces, supercooled drops may run back over more of the jet during the freeze. That’s a big problem; usually only the leading edges of the surfaces like the wings & engines are protected from ice. The shiny parts on the front of airliner wings & around the engine intake are where hot air from the engines gets diverted to heat up that area & melt any ice…but if ice goes beyond that, there isn’t much you can do. Some airplanes have systems to prevent ice formation on the tail, too, but that’s usually electric pads & usually only shows up on T-tail jets. Anyway, regardless of the type, you may get various intensities: trace, light, moderate or severe ice. Induction icing occurs in the engines, as it sucks air in & changes the pressure. You can get induction icing without structural icing, but again, the area around the engine inlet is heated to prevent large chunks of ice from forming, breaking off & going through the engine. We treat icing as a possibility anytime there is visible moisture (rain, snow, fog, clouds) and the temperature is 10°C or below. Yeah, you won’t get structural icing at 10°C, but you might get induction icing. In these conditions, the engine anti-ice is turned on, sending hot air around the leading edge of the engines. The wing anti-ice is used a bit differently & the philosophy here varies widely by airline. I’ve always used it not as an anti-ice, preventing ice from forming like on engines, but as a de-ice…it’s not turned on until I see ice forming. Other airlines have different philosophies. I turn it on, melt the ice, then turn it off. Now, we can’t see the wings well, so on the 737 we use the windscreen wipers as a proxy for the wings. If the large nut on the wiper arm has collected ice, I assume the wings have, too (the windscreens are electrically heated, but it’s not unusual to go through moderate or severe icing & collect some ice around the edges of the windscreen). If you recall, I said the tail often doesn’t have an ice system, and that’s true of the 737. That may sound scary, but it’s not something I’m worried about. If we turn on the wing anti-ice during a flight, the computer assumes the tail may have ice on it & it bumps our approach speed up to give the tail extra air to manipulate. It’s basically an ICE additive to our final approach speed. I hope that helps, I’m out of space.

My view on reparations is that we don't have the money so those countries crying for a bail out of their struggling economies off the back of a trade we ended 200 years ago can forget it. My view on apologies is that the Royal Family apologised in 1840 and we don't need to keep on repeating that apology. Plus Burnham is on about another apology because it is one of the things he thinks might hoover up a voter or two without costing any money. My view on the advocates of reparations is that, without exception, grifters. Assorted academics use the call for reparations to buff up their profile, get lucrative contracts from woke publishers and a pile of appearance fees.

This video is a viral sensation in France and across the EU, on YouTube, TikTok and X. Because we’re all sick of the constant lies from our leaders and ridiculously blaming Russia for every single problem they have themselves caused. It’s such a shame that we cannot make this number 1.

Always remember that we “stupid and uneducated” Brexiteers saw the true nature of the EU long ago. Burnham wants to take us closer to this (after telling his makerfiels voters that he definitely wouldn’t).

Perhaps the most famous airplane ghost story: Eastern Airlines flight 401 crashed into the Florida Everglades shortly before midnight on Dec 29, 1972. The crash was avoidable; a malfunctioning landing gear light distracted the pilots, the yoke was bumped, the autopilot disconnected & the L-1011 jet slowly spiraled into the swamp without anyone noticing. 101 were killed. Now, it’s not uncommon for airlines to salvage useable parts in the aftermath of a crash. Flight 401 was no different; useable parts were recovered & *allegedly* used as spares across Eastern’s L-1011 fleet. According to stories, the ghosts of the Captain & Flight Engineer began to appear aboard jets that used the salvaged parts, warning flight crew of problems that were developing on the jet. Eastern executives were unhappy & warned that sharing such stories was unprofessional. It’s *alleged* that they then ordered all the salvaged parts to be removed from their jets & disposed of, after which the ghost reports stopped. A book was written on the subject, “The Ghost of Flight 401”, which was developed into a TV movie. It also appears in other media from time to time. A second book claimed that the parts had never been installed on other jets & that nobody had reported ghost sightings. The whole thing was just a myth. I don’t believe in ghosts, but certain non-critical parts are definitely salvaged in crashes. They have to be re-certified, but can be used again. Critical parts like wing spars & engines are much less likely to be reused. I don’t pay much heed to these stories, but it seemed appropriate to share tonight!

Unelected officials are rubbish at reading the room. Cocooned in their ivory towers, they've never had to stand for election and they're completely unaccountable to electorates. The EU got it completely wrong when they decided to make a monkey out of David Cameron and it resulted in a referendum, the outcome of which the out of touch failed to predict. The Polish response to the attempted coup looks to be a similarly misjudged own goal by EU zealots. Rather than shaping policy to reflect current political realities, the EU tries to double down on its doctrines. It's always a decade behind the times; slow, cumbersome, unable to be dynamic and in touch. It is the torpid author of its own demise. It's crucified industry across Europe with its suicidal green agendas. It's destroyed businesses with excessive regulation, whilst simultaneously allowing sub standard imports from the Far East to flood the market. Less than 2 decades ago Europe's economy was on par with the US, yet now it trails pathetically behind, unable to unleash itself from dogmatic, unyielding policy. It finds itself swamped with illegal immigration; the very existence of Europe's cultural and historic identity is being extinguished before our eyes, but Shengen must be preserved at all costs and what a dear price we're all paying.

Patrick Stewart's stories from DUNE are pretty great. There's a whole thing about how David Lynch was disappointed when he showed up because ... well, I won't spoil it. And then this, on his first conversation with Sting, is quite funny:
Patrick Stewart was amazing, a bygone sort of actor with working-class ethics and classical aesthetics. One of the most generally beloved men in Hollywood. Could play a nasty villain! Great actor, he will be missed. thebulwark.com/p/patrick-ste…

Los pilotos militares del avión presidencial desobedecieron a la torre de control y aterrizaron sin permiso. Slavery was an evil in which people from every continent and region participated. We should be honest about the whole history, not select the parts that are politically convenient today, especially given Britain's leading role in ending the transatlantic slave trade. If Caribbean countries are asking Britain for a formal apology for Britain’s role in the transatlantic slave trade, will they also be asking the same of the descendants of African kingdoms, rulers and merchants who captured, sold and profited from the trade? On demands for reparations, whether through cash or debt relief, we have been down this track before. Twenty-five years ago, Jubilee 2000, Drop the Debt and Make Poverty History argued that cancelling the debts of poorer countries would give them a fresh start. More than $100 billion of debt was eventually written off, but many of those countries have since built up even bigger debts. Labour are already spending too much on Britain's welfare state, now is not the time for Andy Burnham to be providing global welfare. There is no reason British taxpayers today should be held financially responsible for things that happened generations before any of us were born. And I have even less patience for political elites in commonwealth countries who don’t know how to make their own citizens prosperous now looking for another opportunity to blame Britain. As Prime Minister, Andy Burnham should be Britain’s greatest defender. Instead, he is writing articles saying we need to confront our history (as if we haven't done enough of that) and considering another formal historical apology. Tony Blair already expressed Britain’s deep sorrow and regret for our role in the slave trade nearly twenty years ago. There is no need to do so again. This is all another navel-gazing distraction. The Commonwealth should be looking forward, not endlessly backwards. That means economic partnerships to make us all richer and deeper military and security cooperation against common threats. If every Commonwealth summit becomes an exercise in presenting Britain with demands for cash then we need to start asking if it is worth the effort.
