If you've felt like the gap between the top college football teams and other good teams has felt smaller this season, you're correct based off of opponent-adjusted net EPA/play
Here is the gap between the #1 team in net EPA/play and the #15 team by season (all through 7 weeks):
•2019: +0.23
•2021: +0.17
•2022: +0.17
•2023: +0.19
•2024: +0.16
•2025: +0.21
•2026: +0.10(!)
NEW: Kentucky head coach Will Stein on the 24-team College Football Playoff:
"Everybody says the (regular season) games aren't going to matter. Really? I think that's a really lame take, to be honest. As far as I know every game in College Football is going to matter."
He later added: "You telling me you wouldn't want a Playoff game at Kroger Field? I think those takes are bad."

College Football Playoff expansion injects hope into College Football’s middle class🙏
"It changes the outlook for a lot of Big Ten teams not in the category of Ohio State and Indiana right now," @Sean_Callahan says as leading voices from fan bases nationwide weigh in.

Successful Play Rate Differential vs. Explosive Play Rate Differential, P4 vs FBS through Week 7...
Once again, ND & BYU are neck-and-neck... Ole Miss kinda meh?... And we need a name for the cluster of Lou/OK State/Kansas that are just the goofy dragon meme.

▫️Demon Deacons Domination (poor Cal)
▫️Great showdown between two Big 12 perennial title contenders, Utah & Houston

Remember when people wanted Jeanty to win the Heisman so badly they tried the worst bad faith campaign ever of gaslighting people into believing Hunter was just a “mid” player at both of his positions

Some people are way too steeped in college narrative and in the moment emotional weight of outcomes to objectively assess QBs as prospects.

Two crucial moments permanently changed our relationship w/the regular season:
1) 2000: Washington beats Miami, Miami beats FSU, all finish w/1 loss. BCS computer picks FSU for title game, UM 2nd, UW distant 3rd
2) 2001: Oregon wins Pac-10 outright, 11-1. Nebraska gets trucked by Colorado, 62-38, to end season. Finished 3rd in the B12 (didn’t even qualify for conference title game). BCS computer sends Nebraska to BCS championship Rose Bowl over the Pac-10 champion
Everything since then has been a slow decay regarding the preeminence of the regular season

Applied the proposed rules (4 + 1 +19) of the 24 team college football playoff to create brackets for every season since the 4 team CFP started. It's not just adding 12 more teams to the current format so you'll see some interesting omissions and seed changes.

As I've talked about on Football Weather and on CrimsonCast, I'm in support of this change to 24. Primarily because:
- The regular season has already been severely devalued by having too many teams in too few conferences with no good way to properly evaluate the relative strength of teams in a 12 game season
- The conference championships today are not actual conference championships. They reward the benefits of random strength of schedule luck, while punishing key teams with an extra game of wear and tear (ask Georgia fans about this)
- If we're really going to try and maintain a 130+ program top division of college football, you cannot limit meaningful annual postseason opportunities to less than 10% of those programs - that is a recipe for both financial and political disaster. And whether you want that to matter or not, the reality is that it very much matters
- FCS does a similar format already and it's thrilling

Look, there's a lot that we can disagree with about a 24-team playoff.
One thing we can all agree on is that quarterfinals need to be played on campus. We do not need to be giving these games away to the bowl sites that fans don't want to go to.

“Pro Football Focus got so big that by 2017, the winning play in the Super Bowl, Eagles over Patriots, was helped materially, the touchdown pass to Zach Ertz that won the Super Bowl, that was a play that Frank Reich and Doug Pederson got by studying stuff from Pro Football Focus with bunch formations”
