Every February, 70% of the commercial honey bees in the United States, roughly two million colonies, are loaded onto lorries and driven to California. They are going to pollinate the almonds. 80% of the world's almonds come from one valley in California. Over 1.3 million acres of nothing but almond trees, blooming for three weeks in monoculture, requiring more pollinators than the state can produce on its own. So the bees are trucked in from every corner of the country. Florida. New York. Montana. The bees are fed sugar water for the journey because their own honey has been removed to lighten the load. They arrive in the Central Valley to a landscape that is, for three weeks, pink and white blossom, and for the other forty-nine weeks of the year, dead. Nothing to eat. No forage. No diversity. Just almond trees and bare dirt, sprayed regularly with fungicides and insecticides that were deemed bee-safe in adult bees but turn out to be lethal to larvae when combined. In February 2025, commercial beekeepers reported the worst die-off on record. Around 60% of commercial honey bee colonies in the United States dead in a single pollination season. Financial losses estimated well over $139 million. Some beekeepers lost 90 to 100% of their colonies. The almonds are marketed as plant-based. Clean. Ethical. The preferred alternative. The preferred alternative requires the single largest managed pollination event in human history and it is quietly killing the pollinators faster than they can be replaced. Every glass of almond milk is, statistically, a small contribution to the largest pollinator die-off on record. This is not in the advertising.

One of the dumber things you hear lately, from a lot of supposedly non-dumb people, is “stocks and bonds are now trading positively correlated so you now desperately need this other investment that’s way way more correlated with stocks than are bonds.” Those investments are the typical. Privates (which are just equity, so it’s “you need more equity to diversify your equity”), buffer funds (which are just equity + cash minus some number), and crypto (which increasingly trades like equity, and is, you know, mostly nonsense, but even if you love it it’s currently bringing more equity exposure than bonds). My colleagues latest explaining:

Amazon should focus on the fact that it will fall roughly 1,000 satellites short of meeting its upcoming deployment milestone, rather than spending their time and resources filing petitions against companies that are putting thousands of satellites in orbit.
NEWS: Amazon has filed a formal petition calling on the FCC to deny @SpaceX’s 1 million-satellite proposal for orbiting data centers, going as far to claim the project would take “centuries” to deploy. Amazon: “Deploying the proposed million-satellite constellation would take centuries, even assuming the availability of all global launch capacity to do so. In short, the Application seems to describe a lofty ambition rather than a real plan—and a speculative placeholder rather than a complete application under the Commission’s rules.” 🤦‍♂️

The end is nigh as must be for all good things. The last-but-one paper in Antti's series Understanding Return Expectations is out today. The title is a mouthful, "Bond Market Focus: Yield Curves and Mean Reverting Rate Expectations." Key points below and links in the next post.  The paper offers a new interpretation to the notoriously wrong-footed bond yield forecasts in this century. For a long time both economists and markets kept predicting rising rates while bond yields kept falling to ever lower lows. It turns out that these persistently wrong forecasts were rational when they were made, but the downward surprises just kept coming. Mean-reverting rate expectations also explains why the yield curve flipped from upward-sloping to inverted after the 2022 Fed rate hikes.
