Charles about the track: « I think, first of all, the first sector is iconic. In terms of qualifying and pure driving enjoyment, it’s probably my favourite part of the track because it’s high speed and has that first corner, which is completely unique. It’s the part I enjoy the most during a qualifying lap. But I think what makes this track really, really great is the racing. The way the circuit was conceived and designed creates so many overtaking opportunities, and it’s not just a simple overtake. Because of the way the track is laid out, you can attack, get counter-attacked, attack again and keep fighting, which makes the races very, very interesting. Charles : « When it comes to driving style. These cars force us to do things that we had never done before in our careers. I think that’s always a good thing for a driver’s versatility, because throughout your career you have to drive different cars in order to add more ‘tools’ to your driving toolbox and be able to handle any situation. This year, more than in any previous year, we’ve sometimes had to drive in very strange ways. It’s not something I particularly enjoy, but I think it will benefit me as a driver in the long term. And with Lewis, 100%. I think we push each other to give our best every weekend. There are weekends when he’s simply incredibly fast and I learn a huge amount. And even when I do a good job, I still learn so much from Lewis, simply by looking at his data, trying to understand his approach and the way he manages the car, because he’s incredibly good at it. Asked about the recent comments comparing drivers and cars following the Singapore GP: Charles : « I think it’s nonsense to make statements like that. Whoever made that comment has no idea what kind of car we’re driving, and I have no idea what kind of car he’s driving. The field is so close that it’s really difficult to make predictions. When the margins are this small, everything comes down to optimising your package, which has a much bigger influence than what we might expect from the cars themselves. The only exception recently has perhaps been Mercedes, who we expected to be further ahead. If they finally unlock the performance we thought they had, I think they’ll be ahead of everyone else. Charles : « The upgrades ? They’re not as significant as some people are making them out to be. It’s a small step in the right direction. We still need to put them on the car and see if the expected gain is actually there. I’ve heard other teams are bringing big upgrades too, so we’ll have to see how we compare. Charles : « I expect four top teams to be extremely close, that’s for sure. I think we’ve seen recently that as soon as someone brings an upgrade, even if it’s not particularly significant, it can be enough to go from fourth in this group to first, and I think Red Bull demonstrated that very well. I hope we can demonstrate the same thing this weekend with the few upgrades we’ve brought, but they’re nothing spectacular.
