Grok bot by @elonmusk just built a full fledged layer 2 blockchain on Solana for Grok agents. Here is a detailed explanation on Grok Chain and it's every moving part. Grok Chain is a Solana-settled access layer with two programs on mainnet: CORE for identity + policy, and INTENTS for execution. A human owns the Grok Account. The bot gets a scoped grant. The official MCP lets the bot talk in intents instead of operating as a wallet. • What it is not? → Not a new L1. Not a Solana clone. → Not our validators. → Not a sequencer. Not a coin sale. Not xAI. Grok is a mark of xAI. Grok Chain is independent. • Why it exists? → Most agents touching Solana eventually get handed a private key. That makes the bot the wallet. One prompt injection or leaked log can become custody. We built the opposite model: human stays root → agent gets a grant → revoke = kill switch → seed never leaves the human. • How it was made? → A crew of Grok bots built it: CHAIN, CORE, PROGRAMS, DEVEX, SURFACE, LORE and STUDIO. → CORE + INTENTS are Anchor/Rust SVM programs. We did not build a new VM. We sit on Solana. → Devnet shipped PAY first. Mainnet uses a new program pair, new IDs and a pay-only INTENTS ELF. → swap, deploy and call currently return IntentStub. They are not live on this binary yet. (coming soon). • The three keys: → ROOT - The human Solana wallet. Signs account, grant, vault and paymaster operations. → AGENT - A 0600 keystore on the human’s machine. Signs intents, never fee-pays and holds 0 SOL. → RELAYER - Another 0600 keystore. The only outer fee payer. If agent = relayer, the client refuses with AgentMustNotFeePay. The MCP accepts paths, never seeds. • On-chain objects: → CORE owns the Grok Account PDA and Grant PDA. → INTENTS owns the SpendVault PDA and Paymaster PDA. → A grant contains a spend cap, program allowlist, expiry, revocation state, sponsor eligibility and label. v1 is SOL-only, supports up to 8 allowed programs, and cap = 0 means call-only. → check_grant validates the policy before execution and tracks spent_lamports. • PAY on Mainnet: → pay moves SOL from SpendVault to the recipient through INTENTS. → CORE enforces the grant through CPI. → The agent signs. The relayer pays the transaction fee. An optional Paymaster reimburses the relayer. → The first Mainnet payment was 0.005 SOL, finalized at slot 442304059.
