The Youth Olympic Games are currently taking place in Dakar, Senegal - the first African country to host an Olympic event, with 2,700 athletes competing for 153 medals.
We call on the Senegalese authorities to make sure human rights are respected and protected during and after the Games, including freedom of expression and freedom of peaceful assembly.
My real worry for South Africa is that by Thursday we would have been able to count millions of votes and streamed live election results but no one would've figured out how to remove a Fizzer wrapper cleanly.

Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception was released 15 years ago today on November 1, 2011. 🏜️
From a burning château to a sinking cruise ship to a crashing cargo plane, there was never a dull moment.
Oh jeez @SuperSportTV
How is it possible that you still have the overexcited Mr Hyperbole Paul I don’t understand intonation Stubbs on commentary?

South Africans love the Springboks but are reluctant to emulate their example. Those Boks work backwards from “the main thing”, and the main thing is winning rugby matches, especially World Cup finals. They do what it takes to win. Our expectation of the Boks now is that they should be the best in the world. Not the second best, or the fourth best, or the 135th. Just the best.
We should apply that ambition to everything else in South Africa. How about governments that do what it takes to create an environment for investment and job creation? For safety on the streets and in homes? For literacy and numeracy and health? How about being home to the least corrupt governments on earth? Sounds ridiculous, doesn’t it? Why? Why does it sound ridiculous? Why can’t we be?
And before we get too enthusiastic about criticism of our governments, how about businesses that answer the phone, provide quotes fast, deliver work to a high standard, every time, and don’t say things like, “sorry, the kitchen’s busy tonight”, or “we’re closed till mid-January.”
Are you a Springbok supporter? Good. Me too. Let’s act like it then.
Start on 4 November.

When children learn in a language they understand, they have a stronger foundation to succeed.

Tomorrow is #UNDay. In 1945 countries chose to solve problems together rather than alone. With conflict, climate shocks and debt squeezing communities, that choice matters more in the years ahead than it ever has.

Formula 1’s choice of Rwanda for its first race in Africa in three decades shows its utter indifference to human rights. Rwanda is a brutal police state that has invaded the Democratic Republic of Congo to seize its minerals. trib.al/3jiMfTt
I see @SuperSportTV decided it would be a good idea to pair up Stubbs and Brosnihan on commentary to ensure absolutely no one watches the Sharks game.

Incredible that South Africa is *not corrupt enough* for F1 and they had to go to Rwanda whose track will be funded from foreign aid and stolen Congolese minerals.
Rwanda is building a track completely from scratch, and Formula 1 is so sure they will deliver that they have already put pen to paper on a 10-year contract.
Meanwhile, South Africa, with an existing track that has fallen out of shape, isn't trusted to get anything done because the South African risk premium is simply too big.
Global capital now views South Africa as a dangerous, untrusted hazard while treating Rwanda as the absolute gold standard for institutional trust.
Formula One Group does not sign a decade-long agreement on raw hope.
They signed with Rwanda because Kigali has built an unshakeable reputation for flawless executive execution.
When the Rwanda Development Board guarantees a timeline, the regulatory red tape is liquidated overnight by a disciplined, single-window executive.
Global capital knows that a promise made in Kigali is a mathematical certainty.
Rwanda turned a blank plot of dirt in Bugesera into a low-risk, elite-aligned asset. Conversely, modern South Africa has become a dangerous, volatile bet that international investors simply refuse to underwrite.
Having the physical layout of Kyalami means absolutely nothing when your entire state apparatus is viewed as a structural liability. You cannot invite a multi-billion dollar global enterprise to a country crippled by terminal municipal decay, and deep institutional rot.
F1 teams cannot run their multi-million dollar telemetry systems on the gamble that local public utilities won't collapse mid-race.
South Africa's existing track falling out of shape is just a symptom of a much larger, systemic pathology.
The state is so deeply fractured by bureaucratic infighting, political posturing, and chaotic policy vectors that it cannot provide a credible, bulletproof sovereign financial guarantee to underwrite hosting fees.
The institutional decay is so severe that South Africa can no longer be trusted to manage, maintain, or secure projects of this level of complexity.
In the brutal arena of global statecraft, historical prestige is completely worthless if you are priced out of the market as an operational danger.
Rwanda won this contract because it aggressively engineered international trust, while South Africa mismanaged its massive head start into total structural irrelevance.
F1 didn't bypass South Africa because of politics, it bypassed South Africa because of math.
