Palliative care in action…ICU consultant asks if I can go to ED Resus now to jointly assess someone who has just been referred to him. As we arrive ED Team say ‘perfect combination… just what we need right now… you should always work like this’ #paliativecare

If this does become legal then it should sit outside of the #NHS @wesstreeting instincts are right on this flawed bill.
From the same Simon Opher quoted by @bmj_latest at @UKHouseofLords this week ‘he believed that assisted dying should not be considered part of a GP’s core services and should instead sit outside the General Medical Services contract. This would mean that general practices would receive additional funding to provide the service’. Frontline GPs and @rcgp have made very clear #assisteddying cannot be part of general practice at all, it seems to me they aren’t being listened to?

Now @UKHouseofLords DP&R Reform Committee warns the #AssistedDyingBill “lacks detail for proper scrutiny” - calling it “skeleton legislation” & “highly inappropriate….sweeping, unspecified, unjustified powers.” Read full report here: shorturl.at/mzOEN @LordPeterHendy

The Assisted Dying Bill is one of the most consequential pieces of legislation we will ever consider. A group of cross-party peers (including me) are asking to be allowed to do our job properly and scrutinise the Bill robustly.

Care England, entirely neutral on the question of #assisteddying/#assistedsuicide, surveyed its members about the #Leadbeaterbill. Clearly, no one has thought through the implications for the NHS or for carers! Time for @UKParliament to reject this dog's dinner of a bill.

So don’t believe a word about “safeguards” and “strict monitoring” of assisted suicide. When the US sneezes, we catch a cold: this one with lethal consequences. Don’t confuse care and kill, choice and coercion, or the right to live with a money-saving duty to die. @wesstreeting is right - we need comprehensive world beating palliative care. Jurisdictions that begin with a little euthanasia end up with a lot. We don’t need a National Death Service. @Tanni_GT @Live_Die_Well @frankcottrell_b @thelizcarr @historykev @StephanieFraser @RightToLifeUK @CareNotKilling @ShabanaMahmood @russrook @LordPhilofBrum @MorrisseyHelena @matthew_elliott
🚨 SCOOP: In many of the 11 US states that have legalized assisted suicide, the health authorities have simply stopped tracking cases. Thousands of suicides-by-doctor, with no record of proper consent and safeguards. @AlexanderRaikin for UnHerd. unherd.com/2025/08/how-ameri…

Some people think becoming disabled means your life (figuratively and sometimes literally) should be over. So they treat Disabled folks like independence is unrealistic, then act shocked when we face barriers those beliefs created. A self-fulfilling prophecy of their own ableism.

Canada delayed it's implementation for 3 years not to research or to prepare, but due to push back and public scrutiny in part by the disabled community. They are simply waiting until the clock runs out to implement it. They aren't planning on changing a single thing.

Each euthanasia provider is meant to follow the criminal law. But in Ontario, the Chief Coroner found instead in 2018 "a pattern of non-compliance, a pattern of not following legislation, a pattern of not following regulation." New docs reveal the problem has gotten worse. A🧵
New online — Ontario’s euthanasia regulators have tracked 428 cases of possible criminal violations, and not referred a single one to law enforcement. Read about the leaked documents, first revealed publicly moments ago by @AlexanderRaikin: thenewatlantis.com/publicati…

“If you don’t have a disability, you get suicide prevention. If you do — they treat you like your life isn’t worth living.” We see a strikingly similar story unfolding in Colorado, where MAiD laws are putting people with disabilities at risk. We hope that lawmakers do the right thing: repeal this discriminatory law. kdvr.com/news/local/disabili…

Falconer suggested that the Lords must ‘uphold’ what ‘the Commons have decided to go ahead with’. A rather novel downgrading of our second house . I’ve explored this further in the @spectator
Why the Lords doesn’t have to accept the Assisted Dying Bill The reality is that both the House of Commons and the House of Lords play an equal role in the passing of legislation, except when it comes to matters of financial privilege ✍️ Nikki Da Costa spectator.co.uk/article/why-…

The proposed changes to Pharmacy in the 10YP have almost gone unnoticed (well, not on the MedTwitter). But I think these are MONUMENTAL. To the point of completely resetting who a pharmacist is and what they do. 1/

Over 660,000 people die each year in the UK, yet too many still can’t access the care and support they need at the end of life. That reality drives the work of Professor @kesleeman , whose NIHR-funded research is changing how the UK and the world care for people in their final days. Professor Sleeman’s research has informed policy changes, and a @WHO global call to embed palliative care in all health systems Find out more about how NIHR-supported research is improving end-of-life care nihr.pulse.ly/teeyvuz5rd
