I think they had a tail stall as the primary factor (and possibly the right wing based on bank angle as they went into the dive), which requires opposite yoke inputs to recover from on a T-tail aircraft.
The Lear 60 has a combo deicing system that uses both bleed air from engine compressors and an electrical system for the horizontal stabilizer. It's managed by the STAB WING HEAT switch on the center console. If the annunciator light indicates failure, it turns from white to amber to notify the pilots that the tail section may be accumulating ice.
I'm curious if this system failed, which would cause an ICTS (Ice-Contaminated Tailplane Stall) - an aggressive, uncommanded nose-down pitch and immediate loss of pitch and attitude control.
The Lear's T-tail is it is an upside-down wing, applying downward lift to counter the natural nose-heavy tendency of the aircraft.
I think if they had a tail stall - loss of that downward force, then puts them into an abrupt, near-vertical dive. The Lear 60 flight manual outlines this very scenario and notes that tail ice will cause:
- Trim speed deterioration
- Elevator buffeting
- Severe control column oscillations that can change rapidly or violently escalate with adjustments to engine power
There is no warning system for a tail stall either, and once the dive happens, overspeed happens within seconds and as the aerodynamic air load builds, it will rip the airframe apart.
