6 in 10 carers who faced issues working while claiming Carer’s Allowance said it affected their ability to work. 4 in 10 said they’d left work because of it. Removing the earnings limit cliff edge is a major breakthrough after years of campaigning. carersuk.pulse.ly/fthpzqix1u

Looking forward to chatting about these on @LBC at 13.40. The one that really jumps out is Carers Allowance. Someone caring 35 hours a week can get £84/week. Right now they can work 16 hours @ NLW. If they work £17 hours they lose *the entire carers allowance*. Total madness. 1/4
🚨 NEW: Andy Burnham has announced five "everyday fixes" ahead of the Budget 1. Carer's Allowance will be changed so carers no longer lose their entire benefit when they earn over the limit - instead, their support will reduce by £1 for every extra £1 they earn 2. Import tariffs will be removed on more than 100 products, including baked beans, chocolate and gherkins, to save households up to £21 on their food shop a year 3. Tax-free mileage rates for workers using their own cars will be made permanent at 55p per mile for the first 10,000 miles, with the rate for additional miles rising from 25p to 35p 4. Parental pay will be extended to over 150,000 more parents a year, including self-employed fathers and partners 5. Hundreds more Post Office drop boxes will be rolled out to save people queueing at branches

Poverty in NI 2026 report @jrf_uk said that while it's not possible to determine the impact of the mitigations from the stats "they are seen to be acting as a significant buffer against some of the most significant reductions in social security entitlement"

"The Executive can rightly take credit for its actions to implement and sustain the mitigations over the last decade. They remain an important example of how local decisions that consider the local context and demographics can achieve positive outcomes." jrf.org.uk/understanding-pov…

📉 The risk of falling into poverty is not distributed equally - Lone parent families - Larger families (3+ children) - Families with young children (with a child under the age of 5) - Households where someone has a disability All face an elevated risk of being in poverty.

However, child poverty levels in Northern Ireland remain stubbornly high. 🗣️ It's clear that intervention is needed. ✍️ That's why one of the key recommendations in our report is the introduction of a targeted child payment for families at particularly high risk of poverty.

👀"results suggest that both material deprivation & food insecurity would have been between 8 & 9 % points higher in Scotland w/out the policy, which corresponds to over 70,000 fewer children living in material deprivation & food insecurity as a result of the SCP’s introduction"

Good to hear the Prime Minister saying to @bbclaurak that crude cuts to welfare just push costs elsewhere, and the problems we need to address are the economic failures that put pressure on our social security system. He’s right about this.
