I'm thinking more about Thanksgiving-related data/reporting issues or ppl delaying getting care. You're right, I don't think it would be from Thanksgiving-related transmission yet

The US purchased 171 million bivalent BA.5 booster shots; <10% have been given. There's a new wave on the way, fueled by BQ.1.1. A booster is your best shot to add protection vs severe Covid wsj.com/articles/many-americ… by @StephArmour1 washingtonpost.com/health/20… by @Carolynyjohnson

This is amazing! Thank you! I've been switching back and forth between @FiveThirtyEight and @270toWin to try and get a sense of where things stand. Really could have used the two weeks ago lol
I made a midterm elections dashboard using @FiveThirtyEight and @CookPolitical data Access it at: ckelly17.github.io/2022_hous…

Worth noting that the statistical bodies in the UK are now using a 5 year comparison of 2016-19,21 (ie excluding 20). But deaths were very high in early 21, so the reference is currently higher than a pre-pandemic measure of mortality. I discuss this here covidactuaries.org/2022/01/1…

Omicron is different, continued (latest @ICNARC report).

And in every region, the proportion of COVID patients who are being treated *for* COVID is still falling. Omicron is a very different proposition to Delta for hospitals. Greater pressure from 'incidental' cases and staff absence and less from *for* COVID patients.

This is, I think, interesting. Overall COVID bed occupancy is falling in England, but the fall in patients being treated *for* COVID is bigger, it's just being hidden by a continued rise in patients in hospitals *with* COVID.

The latest Omicron developments are encouraging: 1. New cases are plummeting in a growing list of places. 2. The % of cases causing severe illness is much lower than with Delta. 3. Vaccines remain extremely effective in preventing bad illness. 🧵 nytimes.com/2022/01/19/brief…

Nearly two years since the US testing debacle began 18 months since the first serious rapid-test proposals were made 13 months since BinaxNOW received an EUA Six weeks since “should we just send one to every American?” But eventually they did it. The beautiful bastards did it
Not gonna lie, best government website I have ever used. You just type your address, click one button, and they send some tests. Many said this could not be done, for some reason. And yet—behold! covidtests.gov/

It will be very interesting (epidemiologically) to watch how Australia fares with Omicron 🇦🇺 Immunity acquired almost solely through vaccination & very little infection Case rates in Australia now eye-wateringly high, but mortality rates staying nice and low (but rising…)
