Patrick Stewart's entire body of work, but as Picard in particular, is something that connects the person I am today with who I was as a kid. It collapses time for me. I still have the same awe and fascination with his performance and belief that it represents the best of us.

In fact she says AIDS killed not only a generation of artists but people who understood & appreciated art, which has had a direct effect on culture. (On the economics of NYC, too.) She didn’t invent this. Sarah Schulman says similar, as do friends of mine who lived through it. 🧵
Because she is more interested in being a socialite than writing, Fran Lebowitz’s career fell off. To rationalize this, she made up a theory that AIDS specifically targeted the smart, cool gay guys. If you think about what this says about living elder gays, it’s really rancid.

The course of world history would be different if Al Gore had won in 2000 but, even more important than that, America would have had its first "Halloween President"
If I was president I would 100% lose my party the midterms because I'm too busy being locked in decorating the White House for Halloween. My opponents would say "All the president cares about is his scary animatronics" and they'd be right.

Fox News stars Ainsley Earhardt and Sean Hannity tied the knot on Saturday at the historic Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea in Palm Beach, Florida, returning to the place where Hannity proposed over Christmas in 2024. Surrounded by their children, relatives and closest friends, the couple exchanged vows in a heartfelt ceremony that reflected their shared faith and the importance of family in their lives. French philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau has been gravely injured in a carriage accident: as he walked along a narrow street in Paris, a nobleman’s carriage came rushing past in the opposite direction. Rousseau was knocked down, suffering a concussion and neurological damage, with seizures.

Gaza is absolutely one of the most important foreign policy questions of the last 25 years precisely because the stakes are so low for global powers: it asks, "Will you stop an obvious humanitarian catastrophe even though the outcome won't significantly affect your interests either way?"
This is such an interesting clash of cultures. I'm not sure Gaza ranks among even the top 20 foreign policy questions of the last 25 years. Iraq is a bit higher, but in the long run, surprisingly inconsequential too.

The GRU hacked into Jared Kushner's iPhone. Dutch military intelligence (MIVD) then recruited a GRU spy who gave them access to the hacked phone. What MIVD discovered was that Kushner had access to two bank accounts --one Azerbaijani, the other Israeli --where Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Emirati ruler Mohammed bin Zayed deposited money. It sounds like a slightly far-fetched episode of "Slow Horses," but it's real. And it proves just how eye-poppingly corrupt this administration was and continues to be as its "special envoy" decides the fate of tens of millions in Europe in the Middle East. Simply incredible reporting by Matthew Cole, drawn from his new book on Kushner. vanityfair.com/story/jared-k…

Hispanic/Latino communities such as Little Village have been violently terrorized by Republicans and Feds for the past 411 days, so it's with great pleasure that I say: "Go Fuck Yourself Sideways, Darren Bailey."
Last week Cindy and I walked 26th Street in Little Village with our friend Alex. These business owners work hard, love their community and just want to be safe and left alone. We heard you, and we're going to fight for you.

It is a basic principle of American democracy that the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say. But that’s exactly what the Trump Administration is doing to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota. To understand why this is so appalling, it’s important to know the facts. Congresswoman Omar came to this country with her father when she was 12 years old. Five years later, her father became a naturalized citizen. If Ilhan had been 18 at the time, she would have had to apply for citizenship separately. But because she was 17, she became a naturalized citizen automatically. Congresswoman Omar went on to graduate from college, work as a community organizer, become the first Somali-American legislator elected to public office in the U.S., and win a seat in Congress. There, she has been one of the Trump Administration’s fiercest critics, which has led the president to repeatedly single her out as someone who he believes does not belong in this country. Now the Administration is actively trying to deport Congresswoman Omar, seemingly based solely on the unsubstantiated theory that she was actually 18 when her father was naturalized, and therefore is not a citizen. Federal agents have raided her home, confiscated personal records, and seized her phone — all to try and uncover a nonexistent smoking gun from 20 years ago that will somehow make their case. Think about that. The full weight of the federal government is being brought down on a law-abiding elected official because she has dared to criticize the president. And it’s not the first time this has happened. Under President Trump, the Justice Department has repeatedly gone after those he considers his political enemies — from the Attorney General of New York, to the former head of the FBI, to members of the Federal Reserve. In those cases, the prosecutions either stalled or were dismissed for having no basis in law, and the same is likely to happen in this case. But not before Congresswoman Omar’s life has been turned upside down, her legal bills have piled up, and she’s been forced to spend time fighting unsubstantiated charges instead of serving the people of Minnesota. The fact that any president, or any administration, is willing to engage in such transparent efforts to intimidate someone should outrage all Americans, regardless of how they feel about Congresswoman Omar’s political views. Because if this becomes the new normal, there’s no reason to believe it will stop with her — or that future presidents, in either party, won’t do the same.
