Great summary of vulnerability / resilience of ecosystems to oil & gas: "Given the magnitude of the deep ocean habitats... data gaps urgently need to be addressed and the roles of deep-sea species properly evaluated" frontiersin.org/articles/10.…

Sad day for the families and friends of those lost in the #Titan @OceanGate but it doesnt change my support for human-occupied submersibles like #Alvin @WHOI which took me to 6000m last year. I’d do it again tomorrow!

Ironic to see this on display in the building in Oslo where we are meeting to discuss deep-sea coral restoration. “The oil and gas industry learns from mistakes” Do they?

Just realized that it was about this time 30 years ago that I decided to be a deep-sea biologist. Thanks @MLMLmarinesci Fitting that I am on an epic journey of research over the last few weeks including DC, NYC, Sapelo Island, NIOZ, Oslo, then Edinburgh. Science!

Where are humans still drilling for #oilandgas ? Middle-east #1. Brazil, Norway, and the US should be moving away, but more troubling are Guyana, Uganda, Angola, Malaysia where there is little oversight and mgmt. @DeepStewardship nytimes.com/2023/04/06/clima…

Batteries are the new battleground for US / China relations @NYTScience VP Kamala Harris in Africa: 70% cobalt mining in Congo, 67% refining in China. US still not in #UNCLOS so out of some deep-sea mining. But not a trade-off - they will mine everywhere they are allowed to.

Interesting differences in the take on the settlement from Temple's President and the Faculty Union. As always, they are both right, and they are both wrong.

Hearing more people using #ChatGPT to help write manuscripts. I think there are major ethical issues with this, and it just feels like cheating - you should express your own thoughts, not use AI to harvest those of others. Thoughts? sciencemagazinedigital.org/s…
