When I launched The Phoenix, I knew there would be people who wouldn't see the value in paying for online content.
I get that. We've become so accustomed to getting everything for free that, for some, a website overrun with adverts will always be preferable to an ad-free site that costs a few quid a month.
That's absolutely fine.
What I perhaps underestimated was the anger that some people would feel simply because someone was offering them the choice of paying for their work.
Since launching on 20 July, I've added 140 stories to The Phoenix, totalling more than 200,000 words.
That includes in-depth interviews with people like Adi Viveash, Darren Huckerby and Leo Østigård, with at least one new 3,000-plus-word interview every week. There's also tactical analysis, opinion pieces, matchday coverage and plenty more.
Despite that, I've seen people describe charging £5 a month for this work as 'shameful', 'embarrassing' and 'a con'.
I've even been accused of contributing to the 'commercial exploitation of information'.
It's an odd thing. Nobody ever told me it was shameful to charge £16.99 for one of my books about Coventry City. Yet put that same level of research, writing and effort onto a website and suddenly asking people to pay for it becomes controversial.
Nobody has to subscribe. Nobody has to read it. And I'm absolutely fine with that.
But I don't think there's anything shameful about trying to make a living from producing original, independent journalism about a football club I've supported for more than 30 years.
Still, it's sometimes hard not to take the criticism personally.
Anyway, chin up and all that.
I'm interviewing a key member of our League One title-winning team tomorrow, and I can't wait.
You know where you'll be able to read that one...

🚨 Part two of my exclusive interview with Brighton’s former Head of Football Operations, David Burke, is live.
From the pursuit of Virgil van Dijk and the coincidental train meeting that led to David Stockdale’s arrival, to Sami Hyypiä’s troubled reign and the impact managerial changes had on recruitment, Burke reflects on some of the trickier moments of his time at the Albion.

⚽️ NEW OUTLET! ⚽️
Attention Newcastle United fans: a new site dedicated entirely to intelligent, independent coverage of the Magpies is launching on CounterPress.
The Gallowgate Dispatch, led by @harrydecosemo, is set to offer a fresh perspective on Newcastle, with a focus on exclusive interviews, features, in-depth analysis and opinion.
Harry is a journalist, lifelong Newcastle United fan and former season-ticket holder at St James’ Park. From the highs of the Sir Bobby Robson era, on which he wrote his book Black and White Knight, to the depths of two relegations, he saw it all.
He has covered the club in Dortmund, Paris, Brussels and Barcelona during two Champions League campaigns and was there at Wembley to capture the end of a 70-year wait for a domestic trophy as they won the Carabao Cup in 2025.
Harry has built up strong relationships with people at Newcastle and has interviewed some of the biggest names from the club’s past, while also working for publications including BBC Sport, the Guardian and FourFourTwo magazine.
The Gallowgate Dispatch will, aided by Harry’s strong insight into life at Newcastle United, offer a fresh view of the club’s past, present and future. Through interviews, opinion and analysis, podcasts and deep-dives, there is sure to be something for every kind of fan to enjoy.
Harry said: “I’m so proud to be launching The Gallowgate Dispatch. As the media landscape and coverage of football clubs change, I believe independent journalism is becoming more important.
“My love for Newcastle United was passed down from my dad, and I grew up watching games from Level 7 in the Milburn Stand. Covering the club more recently has given me a new perspective, and I believe there is a gap in the market for that perspective to shine.
“I hope to create a hub for honest, frank and insightful analysis while using my contacts to take readers inside the club, while also detailing some of the most important moments of its history in ways not to be found elsewhere. I hope this can be a place where fans can feel closer to the best club in the world.”
The Gallowgate Dispatch’s early interest waiting list is now open ahead of a full launch in November.
Newcastle supporters keen to explore the platform can secure an exclusive discount on membership by adding their details to the mailing list today.

⚽️ NEW OUTLET! ⚽️
AFC Wimbledon fans rejoice! A new site dedicated entirely to the Dons is launching on CounterPress.
The Resurrection is stepping up to deliver much-needed independent coverage of the League One club. The site promises to become the go-to place for intelligent, insightful reporting on AFC Wimbledon, filling a gap in the market left by the mainstream media and local press.
The site, which will fully launch next month, is fronted by journalist and lifelong Wimbledon fan Gary Jordan.
Having followed the club from the mid-1980’s Crazy Gang era, a lot has happened since that period. From the rise of winning the FA Cup and being a founding member of the Premier League, to the events that took the club away from its foundation. Back through the non-league pyramid, to be firmly back among the Football League.
Gary has written two books on the club. One telling the story of that famous FA Cup win over Liverpool, the other on how they returned to Plough Lane, after decades away, and righted the wrongs that were set on them.
After a short time working with the communications team on the Dons Trust, Gary was the club’s matchday programme editor for a short time, which required interviewing players and staff, as well as promoting all aspects of the club.
The Resurrection members can look forward to a look at the club from all angles, not just the matchdays.
This will include analysis of the team and individual players with statistical analysis; the women's team and academy will also be highlighted. Historical features, community-based news, interviews with key figures both past and present, newsletters, and more.
Gary said: “I’m proud to be starting the AFC Wimbledon outlet on CounterPress, in what is an exciting period for the club.
“Having volunteered and worked for the Dons Trust, and been the matchday programme editor, I know how much hard work and dedication goes into the day-to-day running of this unique football club.
“The club is deep-rooted in its community, and has many award-winning charities, so to be able to bring you news of what goes on beyond the 90 minutes of a matchday is something I look forward to. I look forward to giving you a different look at the club, and with changes around the corner, what better time to get on board. Come On You Dons!”
The Resurrection’s early interest waiting list is now open ahead of a full launch in the coming weeks.
Wimbledon supporters keen to explore the platform can secure an exclusive discount on membership by adding their details to the mailing list today.

⚽️ NEW OUTLET! ⚽️
Miss the football of the 80s, 90s and early 2000s? You’re in luck! A new site dedicated entirely to retro football is coming soon to CounterPress.
Before The Game Was Gone is set to launch on CounterPress next month and aims to become the home of the very best retro football coverage.
The site is fronted by Rich Chamberlain, a journalist with 20 years of experience and, more importantly, a retro football fanatic.
As a journalist, Rich has written for the likes of FourFourTwo and These Football Times. He also published Euro 96: The Full Story, a Kickstarter book which smashed its funding target within two hours of launch.
Having spent almost two decades writing about sport and popular culture, Rich has launched Before The Game Was Gone to celebrate football's golden age, with a particular focus on the 1980s and 1990s.
Combining exclusive interviews with former players, managers and the people behind football's most memorable television programmes and video games, the publication aims to tell the stories behind an era that continues to hold a special place in supporters' hearts.
Rich said: “I grew up watching Renford Rejects and checking Ceefax while eating my breakfast. I would watch Football Italia, Super Sunday and Monday Night Football without fail before tuning into Fantasy Football League.
“When I wasn’t watching football, I would be playing Sensible Soccer and Championship Manager before heading out to swap Merlin football stickers with friends.
“If any of this sounds familiar – Before The Game Was Gone is the perfect site for you.”
Before The Game Was Gone’s early interest waiting list is now open ahead of a full launch in the coming weeks.

📢 NEW OUTLET ANNOUNCEMENT! 📢
A new era of Burnley coverage has arrived on CounterPress, with TurfReports stepping up to deliver much-needed high-quality coverage of the Clarets.
TurfReports is fronted by Joe Redmond and Chris Wilson, who already run the highly respected Burnley podcast and fan channel, TurfCast.
Founded in 2018, TurfCast is now well established in the Burnley community and boasts more than 120,000 followers across its social media channels, including more than 6,600 subscribers on YouTube.
Joe is the founder of TurfCast and a lifelong Burnley supporter with a background spanning journalism, digital content and broadcast.
With TurfReports, Joe aims to build on that foundation to create a dedicated source of engaging, insightful Burnley coverage. Drawing on his knowledge of the club and established contacts, he will bring supporters interviews, analysis and stories that offer a deeper look at the Clarets.
Chris began his career working in the statistical side of football, collating live betting data for Genius Sports before moving into journalism, and is now the Deputy Head of Football Previews for Flashscore.
At TurfReports, Chris hopes to bring an in-depth look at the statistical and tactical side of the game, whilst also leaning on his expertise in compiling both previews and reports to create content users won't get elsewhere.
TurfReports members can look forward to detailed reporting on the club across the board - from the men's and women's first teams down to the academy - through written, video and podcast content, with some exclusive stories along the way.
Joe said: "I'm excited about launching TurfReports. Chris and I have been working hard behind the scenes over the last couple of months, so it's great to finally share what we've been building.
"TurfReports will give us the opportunity to go into greater depth through interviews, analysis and features that give Clarets fans more insight into the club.
"We believe there's a real gap in the market for more dedicated Burnley coverage, and we're eager to build something supporters will enjoy and want to be part of."
Chris added: "This is an exciting opportunity for us, something we've long spoken about.
"It's great to see our hard work finally come to fruition and we plan to bring the type of content to Burnley fans that they haven't seen before, in part due to a distinct lack of outlets showing enthusiasm to put Burnley on the map. We're here to change that.
"Perhaps owing to the size of the club, Burnley doesn't get the coverage it deserves, but we're here to plug that gap, producing high-level content across a variety of areas."
The early interest page for TurfReports is now open ahead of a full launch later this month.
Burnley supporters keen to explore the new platform can get their first month free by adding their details to the mailing list now.

🇮🇹⚽️ NEW OUTLET ⚽️🇮🇹
CounterPress will get its first taste of Italian football with the launch of Calcio Society.
The site launches later this month, with the aim of becoming the essential English-language home for Serie A and Azzurri, thanks to independent and expert coverage that brings the tactics, the drama and the culture of Italian football to the fans who follow it from outside Italy.
Calcio Society is fronted by Italian football expert Andrea Locorotondo, who is also co-founder of another CounterPress title, The Holte Roar, which is dedicated to coverage of Aston Villa.
Calcio Society members can look forward to expert match analysis and tactical breakdowns from across Serie A. Opinions, interviews, transfer news, long-form features, a bit of nostalgia, players and stories that define the Italian game: all delivered with the perspective of an accredited journalist who works inside the game rather than watching from the outside.
Andrea said: "Italian football has a huge, passionate following around the world. Since my very early days as a football journalist in the UK, I’ve always found people that, noticing my Italian accent, wanted to know more about where I come from. And when I say 'Italy' the most common reaction was 'you know, back in the days, there was a TV show on Channel 4 called 'Gazzetta Football Italia…' and then, the iconic ‘Gollazzo’.
“Del Piero, Baggio, Totti, Maldini, Baresi, and many others: how good Serie A and the Italian National team were back in the day? Yes, I do believe it was the best league in the world and Italy was one of the most difficult national teams to challenge. However, today, if you follow Serie A in English you're too often left piecing it together from scraps. Calcio Society exists to change that, to give the Italian game the coverage it deserves, in English, all in one place.
"I've spent my career inside this sport as an accredited journalist, and I want to bring that access and an Italian perspective together for fans who love calcio as much as I do. This is independent coverage, so no club lines, no agendas, just honest analysis, proper tactical detail and the stories behind the headlines, whether it's the title race, a mid-table derby or a teenager breaking through.
"After building The Holte Roar with CounterPress, I've seen how powerful this model is for independent journalism, and Calcio Society is the natural next step. I'd love Italian football fans around the world to be part of it from day one."
Calcio Society’s early interest waiting list is now open ahead of a full launch on September 28.
Italian football fans keen to explore the platform can secure an exclusive discount on membership by adding their details to the mailing list today.
