When Marvin Gaye married Berry Gordy’s sister Anna in 1963, the couple intended to raise a family. The problem, however, was Anna’s age — she was already in her forties at the time and unable to conceive a child. Gaye did not want to just adopt a kid, it was important for him to feel a biological connection to the child. So Anna Gordy suggested they get another girl to birth the child for them. She then mentioned she had a fifteen-year-old niece, Denise Gordy. If Marvin impregnates her, the child will have a biological connection to both Anna as well as Marvin. So it was decided — I suppose Denise’s feelings mattered little. Marvin Gaye and his wife groomed her teenage niece; he impregnated her, and when she was sixteen, she gave birth to his first son, Marvin Gaye III. The couple subsequently legally adopted the child and kept his true parentage from him. And Marvin Gaye got away with it. He continued to to enjoy his fame for another decade or so until his own father murdered him inside their family home.
