INTERNATIONAL PLAYER PROFILE: Sauryn Lao - 6’2”/182; 27 YO; Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters (NPB) Sauryn Lao first began his professional baseball journey in 2016, when he signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers as an infielder. By 2023, the right-hander had converted to pitching full-time, eventually making his way to the major leagues in 2025 with the Mariners, and later the Nationals. This past season, Lao spent time in Japan with the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters, where he appeared in parts of three games. There, he struck out four batters and allowed two earned runs through five innings, while walking none. Although the sample size was small, each of Lao’s pitches graded relatively favorably. He primarily relies on a slider/fastball combination, which has proven adequate in garnering whiffs. This winter, Lao will be pitching with the Leones del Escogido in the Dominican Republic. The 27-year-old made his debut this past week, going five scoreless against the Gigantes del Cibao. As a free agent this offseason, Lao will be seeking opportunities to return stateside.
