"We don’t need a TV experiment to see disabled people treated as a burden" - My thoughts on Channel 4's #TheExperiement for @IndyVoices (unpaywalled) archive.ph/DQ4P8

Do watch 'The Experiment' Watch it here on Channel 4: channel4.com/programmes/the-… It offers some history on Aktion T4, the nazi Germany systematic killing of sick, disabled, mentally ill, learning disabled, children & adults from 1939 - 1945 where up to 300,000 were murdered. The forced sterilisation programme ran from 1933. Children & adults were murdered by lethal injection, starvation, and gassing (chamber & mobile van gassing), before it was implemented larger scale in the concentration camps. Mass murder didn't start there, it started with words, propaganda campaigns, to convince the population that disabled people were a burden not deserving of life. This programme was a social experiment to demonstrate how people could be convinced that it's a good idea. Participants were disabled actors with members of the public filmed on a fake tour of a fake residential home using nazi era ideas. The public were unaware of the experiment. The "workshop" showed disabled people doing what we know to be 'industrial therapy', which was still seen in the late 80s in the UK in the old style sprawling asylums like Napsbury and Friern and medium secure units. The public tour participants didn't appear to appreciate the demeaning nature of this. Residents wore uniform clothing, which reminded me of my experience of seeing shared clothing & no underwear in "cheaper" private care homes for older people in the 80s. It was only in the dormitory style barren bedroom with lockers did some tour participants start to question it, though others considered it acceptable. The Experiment held up a mirror to the current demonisation of disabled people, to the rhetoric from politicians, rightwing journalists, MSM, broadcasters, Think Tanks. The nazis wanted genetic supremacy, and used economic burden to achieve their aims. Currently, politicians, MSM, broadcasters and journalists, peddle a not dissimilar rhetoric using economic productivity with economic blame and burden as their method of propaganda and persuasion. Mass killing never starts with injections, starvation, gas, guns, bombs, it starts with words, with a constant drip-feed of othering and propaganda until people are persuaded. What this programme demonstrated is that yes, people can be persuaded. But it also showed us that people can recognise dehumanisation and voice it, those are the voices we must encourage. Susan Sontag, on being asked about what she had learnt reflecting on the Holocaust said that 10% of any population is cruel, 10% is merciful, and the remaining 80% can be moved in either direction. IDS, Jeremy Vine, Helen Whately, Fraser Nelson, Tice, Lee, so many MPs, Mail, Telegraph, Spectator, profs who don't stand up to the daily onslaught, everyone who looks the other way, need to think about which 10% are they? We need to get the 80% to join the merciful 10%.

This is state abuse
A 37-year-old man with a severe muscle-wasting disease has been trapped in a hospital for more than 13 months because of a dispute over his care. Ravi Mehta has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and used to receive NHS funding that allowed him to hire his own carers and to live at home. Now that has been taken away from him, and he is threatened with being put in a care home. #Duchenne #NHS #Care #Channel4News #C4News

In Sheffield Central, only 65% of people have taken up their breast screening when invited. This is lower than the achievable national standard of 80%, so I’m backing Breast Cancer Now’s awareness drive by wearing it pink. Someone dies from breast cancer every 45 minutes. Checking your breasts or chest could save your life. #WearItPink to raise awareness with me!

What do you want to say, but don’t, and who do you want to say it to? Let’s have a cuppa and get it all out! •Fund the NHS •End wage related poverty •Stop the endless and cruel scrutiny of welfare claimants •Pay familial carers a wage they can live on Add to the list:

Cruelty creeps in quietly, repackaged as “common sense,” and ordinary people going along with it. The Nazi regime could not have functioned without the consent and cooperation of ordinary people. The Nazis repackaged the murder of disabled people as “mercy” and claimed that disabled people were stealing money from healthy, hard-working families. They framed social care and welfare as an unaffordable national burden, just like they do today. This is the same rhetoric being fed into the British public by politicians and media.
Oh M G just watched. Thanks for letting us know about this's program. I think the historical part will shock a lot of people. We hear jewish people playing the holocaust card in the news daily to explain away the genocide in Palestine and ethnic cleansing in Lebanon.. Disabled people being bashed constantly for being lazy benefit cheats don't mention this daily: Will hearing the numbers in Germany of those sterilised against their will and murdered in gas chambers will shock some people who disability bash daily in the media. Do they realise how this framing echos Nazi useless eaters propaganda? Will the politicians watch it though? Will they realise this is where the IFS and TBI are pushing the narrative? It wasn't just in Germany.. in UK and Germany and the Nordic countries too during the same time. Look up the experiments done on Autistic and neurodiverse people in America at the same time .... Look how fallen women were treated in Ireland and hysterical women in UK... Scary stuff that you may never recover from reading... Many of the people going round the SegroCare home just accepted it all: we are so far down the rabbit hole with Kemi and Helen and Liz and Pat & Stephen listening to IFS and TBI lies.. repeating them online and on politics and news programmes day in day out. At least four people questioned it ... but the rest thought dormitories with cameras, uniforms and pocket money, sterilisation and euthanasia all looked ticket boo... So disappointing but scarily unsurprising. :(

As someone with a keen interest in #Mentalhealth I asked @nimbusdis some very specific questions around how their #disability #accesscard criteria is applied..👇🏼that was on 29 September, they’ve failed to respond, to date. Abysmal behaviour

It’s simpler than that. We hate him because he’s a pedo c*nt.
“Why do some British people dislike Donald Trump?” Nate White, an eloquent and witty English writer, gave this magnificent answer: Trump lacks certain qualities that the British traditionally value. He has no nobility, no charm, no composure, no gravitas, no compassion, no wit, no warmth, no wisdom, no subtlety, no sensitivity, no self-awareness, no humility, no honour, and no grace — qualities with which, strangely enough, his predecessor, Mr Obama, was abundantly blessed. Although Trump may be ridiculous, he has never said anything ironic, amusing, or even remotely funny — not once, ever. I do not mean this rhetorically. I mean it literally: never. To the British, a lack of humour is almost inhuman. But with Trump, it is a fact. He does not even seem to understand what a joke is. To him, a joke is a crude remark, an illiterate insult, an act of casual cruelty. Trump is like a troll: he never laughs or enjoys himself; he merely squeals with delight or derision. And the most frightening thing is that he does not merely utter crude and stupid insults: he actually means them. His mind is nothing more than a robotic algorithm of petty prejudices and instinctive malice. There is no irony in him, no complexity, no subtlety, no depth. Everything is superficial. What we see is a man without an inner world, without a soul. In Britain, we traditionally side with David, not Goliath. All our heroes are courageous underdogs: Robin Hood, Dick Whittington, Oliver Twist. Trump is neither courageous nor an underdog. He is the exact opposite. He is not even merely a spoiled rich boy or a greedy fat cat. He is more like a giant white slug, a privileged Jabba the Hutt. And, worse still, he is a bully. When he finds himself among other bullies, he suddenly becomes a whining lackey. He punches down — something a gentleman should never, could never, and must never do — and every blow he delivers is below the belt. He particularly enjoys attacking the vulnerable or the voiceless, and he kicks them when they are down. That is why the fact that a substantial minority — perhaps a third — of Americans watch what he does, listen to what he says, and then think, “Yes, he seems like my kind of guy,” is a source of bewilderment and profound distress to the British. After all, it is impossible to read a single tweet of his or hear him utter a sentence or two without staring into the abyss. He turns shallowness into an art form. He is the Picasso of pettiness, the Shakespeare of shit. His flaws are fractal: even his flaws have flaws, and so on to infinity. There have always been stupid people in the world, and villains have never been in short supply either. But rarely has stupidity been so evil, or evil so stupid. He makes Nixon seem trustworthy and George W. Bush seem intelligent. If Frankenstein had decided to create a monster composed entirely of human flaws, he would have created Trump, and the remorseful Dr Frankenstein would have cried out in despair, “My God, what have I created?” If an idiot were a television show, Trump would be the entire set.
