Today's show w/ Chris Finch
- What the summer has looked like for Finch and the Wolves as a team
- The addition of LaMelo Ball
- Anthony Edwards becoming a leader and moving back to shooting guard, "where he belongs"
- Coaching Rudy Gobert and the Wolves team trip to Paris this summer
- Finch on being an "outsider" as a coach and betting on yourself
I'll be talkin Ant's 45-point opening night with @JonKrawczynski and @Gaardsy at 8am CST.
Watch/listen here: youtube.com/live/I1xG5teJgHY…
Asked Jaden McDaniels about how you don't get to choose where you're drafted, and why he's now twice chose to extend in Minnesota.
"Draft process I ain't know where I was going. This was actually the team I was trying to stay away from. So I came here not knowing how it was gonna be."
Did you want to stay away because they were bad at the time?
"Yeah they was just bad. They was bad as fuck."
Asked Jaden McDaniels about the Wolves shooting 50 3s on opening night
"To be honest, I didn't even know we shot 50 3s."
Told him Anthony Edwards and LaMelo Ball combined to shoot 30 of them.
"Oh shit. Shit, it worked. They was makin the shots. So I mean, can't be mad at it. That's what they was given. They take it."
Asked Chris Finch about the choice to stagger Anthony Edwards and LaMelo Ball's minutes on opening night.
"I'm still feelin my way through some of the rotation pieces. There's several things that go into it... We always have a blueprint, but we always leave ourselves the freedom to deviate off it."
Chris Finch on Jonathan Kuminga's opening night.
"Jonathan was phenomenal. In my mind, there was a lot of really good performances, but his sticks out."
The Wolves shot 50 3s on opening night -- 30 of the 50 came from Anthony Edwards and LaMelo Ball.
Asked Ant if he thinks the Wolves could be one of the highest volume 3-point shooting teams in the league.
"We shot 50 3s tonight?"
Seemed to me like a more intense and animated version of Anthony Edwards tonight. Asked him what was behind that.
"A player on they bench was talkin trash... He was talkin pretty crazy. And then when I started talkin to him he didn't really have too much more to say. And I don't really like that. Like, if you gonna talk shit, keep talkin shit. Don't get quiet."
Have been most impressed by Jonathan Kuminga.
Only guy on the team who can do anything defensively against Giannis, and fitting into a medium-sized role on offense cleanly.
It was pretty much a full-stagger of Anthony Edwards and LaMelo Ball in the 1st half.
Edwards and Ball shared the floor for the first 7 minutes of the half and lthe ast 2 minutes of the half. Other than that, one rested while the other played (other than a little 15-second overlap).
Chris Finch when asked about staggering or not staggering the minutes Anthony Edwards and LaMelo Ball are on the floor.
"I haven't settled on anything with regards to that. My gut tells me that I want them on the floor together. That's why we brought him here... Also, we have such great trust in like Ayo and Bones and TJ. And we want those guys to have the ball in their hands when they're in there too. So we don't feel like we have to stagger. We can if we want. But my gut tells me to play them mostly together."
What's stood out to me about the Wolves offense early is tons of 3s, tons of midrange looks, almost nothing all the way to the rim.
The Wolves have a lot of players on long-term contracts...
- Ayo Dosunmu, 5 years
- Jaden McDaniels, 4 years
- Anthony Edwards, 3 years
- LaMelo Ball, 3 years
- Joan Beringer, 3 years then restricted free agency
- Terrence Shannon Jr., 2 years then restricted free agency
Those players will be up for extensions before that. But that's still long-term commitments relative to other teams.
Asked Dosunmu this morning about how the Wolves having many of their main pieces under contract long-term informed his decision to re-sign with Minnesota this summer.
"That was a definitely a part of the pie that made my decision even more firm... Those guys being here long-term, when we're the same age, around the same draft class -- all those variables just made the decision to stay even more firm."
Will be joining PA on KFAN this morning from Miami

Asked Rudy Gobert about getting used to playing with LaMelo Ball during training camp.
"It's one of those guys that are kind of easy to get used to. Because he plays the game -- it just flows... I know that he has the ability to adapt to any situation. He plays off instinct, and we need him to do that."
Charlotte pick and roll frequency last three seasons
25-26: 1st
24-25: 2nd
23-24: 1st
Where Minnesota has ranked in pick and roll frequency during the Chris Finch era
25-26: 24th
24-25: 14th
23-24: 22nd
22-23: 24th
21-22: 25th
@JakePaynting describes how Charlotte got to that volume, and wonders if Finch will push for a similar strategy with Ball in the fold.
Today's show w/ @JakePaynting from @HowlsGrowls
Jake and I made a list of the things we'll have an eye out for in the opener...
- How much pick and roll the Wolves run and who they use as the screener
- Who does the "do shit" stuff that Donte DiVincenzo always brought?
- Who all is in the rotation and who plays with who?
- How the Wolves play when Rudy Gobert is on the floor vs. off the floor
- What the Wolves do against the Miami zone
- How much more LaMelo Ball looks for his own shot in the regular season

Most GMs are worried about what people will say, but Tim Connelly takes very big, polarizing swings 💪

Should Chris Finch play Anthony Edwards and LaMelo Ball at the same time as much as possible, or will he stagger the two guards?
"I'm team stagger." -- @JakePaynting
