AI visibility tools are facing their own version of tracking issues. @Semrush just emailed customers yesterday that Copilot visibility tracking will be discontinued as of 11/9 based on how Microsoft is preventing the tracking of Copilot data. I wonder when other platforms will inform customers.

Iβd be careful about using ChatGPT as a proxy for all AI Search. Look at Gemini and Claude in this chart.
ChatGPT is still ahead, but Gemini gained adoption through most of the period. Claude started climbing much faster in early 2026.
This is a good reason to check what happens to the same question across different tools.
Take a question that came up on a sales call. Ask it in ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude. See who gets recommended and read the sources behind those recommendations.
You might find that a competitor barely shows up in ChatGPT but gets recommended regularly in Gemini. Iβd want to understand that before telling the team our AI visibility looks good.
Youβll need more than one run to see whether that difference holds. But it gives you something concrete to work with.
I wouldnβt split the budget according to this chart. Visiting an AI tool once a month says little about whether someone uses it to research your product.
I would use it to question how much our reporting misses when we only look at ChatGPT.

New blog post: GEO is a distraction.
I looked at 12 months of GA4 data across 100 sites - more than 145 million sessions.
ChatGPT sent 0.62% of the traffic Google organic did. With all the other LLMs included, it's 0.73%.
While ChatGPT visitors converted better at 13.8% vs 3.02% for Google organic, Google still drove 27x more conversions than all the other LLMs combined.
And remember how we thought ChatGPT visitors would increase exponentially? Overall visits from ChatGPT have actually been declining since GPT-5 came out in August 2025.
I think GEO is a distraction. Google is the surface that's likely sending the most visitors to your business. Yes, AI is changing how people use the web, but the real opportunities are just emerging. I'd encourage you to spend time preparing for the agentic web - UCP, Universal Cart, WebMCP, intelligent eyewear and more!
The full post is here, plus a prompt you can use to brainstorm on what agentic search means for your business.

INTERESTING!
Bing Webmaster Tools is once again leading the charge: you can now see topics you're being cited for, how often they're cited and related grounding queries.
This is the closest we have to classic search data.
Your turn, Google!

Before you report an unconfirmed Google update or panic over a major drop in your rank tracker: check if you were served a poisoned SERP.
An interesting new study from @nozzleio looked at 27.5M SERPs across 49 countries and found Google has started actively poisoning results served to scrapers.
Instead of blocking requests with 429s or CAPTCHAs (which just tells scrapers to rotate IPs and retry), Google serves a fully rendered, completely normal-looking SERP.
What this is resulting in is that the organic results are quietly swapped out with irrelevant data.
Some key observations from the study:
β’ 8% of all SERPs were poisoned post-Sept 13 (peaking at ~27% between Sept 27β29)
β’ Organic results kept only ~21% of their usual sites (vs. 88% normal)
β’ Tracked client sites fell out of the top 10 on 58.6% of poisoned SERPs
β’ Social sites like Reddit (+8 pts), Facebook (+5.5 pts), and LinkedIn surged to fill the gaps
β’ Interestingly, paid modules (Ads and Shopping) remained almost completely intact, while AI Overviews and PAA dropped significantly
β’ Desktop pagination was heavily truncated (stopping at page 4 or earlier on deep queries)
This is essentially Google's countermeasure against automated AI scrapers and RAG grounding pipelines, but rank trackers are inevitably being impacted.
If your client's ranking report shows a significant decline overnight, check GSC average position first. If GSC hasn't displayed a major deviation, it is likely that it is a data anomaly rather than a change in your ranking

Incredible: Not only is Google working to block AI crawlers, but @nozzleio uncovered evidence that Google is deliberately serving FAKE search results to scrapers
The "poisoned" search results look real, but w/ garbage data. This influences AI crawlers, scrapers, & rank trackers.

2,400 people bookmarked this, so I turned the entire process into a one-page SOP.
Here's my 6-step process (and prompts) for ranking in Google's AI Overviews:
1. Pick one search you actually want to win
Ideally a buying-intent query that already triggers an AI Overview.
2. Track how Google answers it
Collect the AI Overview over 7+ days.
You can do this in 2 ways:
FREE
Search it manually every day and save:
- The full answer
- Citations
- Date
PAID
Add the prompt to a tool like Mentions.so and automatically track the answers + citations over time.
3. Find what keeps showing up
Paste all the answers into ChatGPT or Claude and add the following prompt:
--
Analyse these Google AI Overview answers and find the patterns that appear across them.
Identify:
- Recurring claims
- Repeated entities
- Common sources
- Common answer formats
- Repeated information/order
- Major differences
For each pattern, show how often it appears (e.g. 8/10 answers).
Then summarise the most consistent patterns Google seems to favour.
--
Youβre basically building a picture of what Google consistently includes for that search.
4. Find what Google is rewarding
Now study the pages that get cited most frequently by using the following prompt:
--
Analyse these pages that Google cites in the AI Overview and tell me what they have in common.
[paste URLs]
Focus on:
- How quickly they answer the question
- Topics and entities they cover
- How they structure the information
- What evidence, data or examples they include
- Whether they use lists, tables, comparisons or steps
- What gaps or differences exist between them
Then summarise:
1. The main patterns across the cited pages
2. What Google seems to be rewarding
3. What a better page should include to compete
--
You want to understand both what they have in common AND whatβs missing.
5. Build something better
Use everything you found to create or improve your page.
- Cover the important topics
- Include the important entities
- Use the right format
- Answer questions immediately
- Make the information incredibly clear
Then give Google something NEW to cite:
- Original data
- First-hand experience
- Better examples
- New statistics
- Better comparisons
- Useful tables
- Questions nobody else answered
Donβt just copy whatβs already winning, use it as the baseline and then make yours better.
6. Publish and track
Monitor the same search over time.
- Does your page start appearing?
- Which sections seem to perform?
- What sources keep winning?
- What changes in the AI Overview?
Then use what you learn to keep improving the page.
