Nearly one year in, New York's congestion relief program is saving people time and creating good jobs on construction projects to deliver the reliable, accessible subway service that millions of riders deserve, not just in Manhattan, but deep into Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx

I'm glad New Yorkers' concerns about bus fare enforcement have led the MTA to pause its EAGLE teams. When low-income New Yorkers—especially Black & Latino New Yorkers—already face over-policing, this violent treatment from the MTA is unacceptable and EAGLE teams must end for good

My statement on the MTA Eagle Teams:
Deploying MTA EAGLE teams in low-income communities is not the answer to fare evasion—it turns already frustrating, unreliable bus commutes into opportunities to intimidate working-class New Yorkers and criminalize poverty.
Full statement 👇
There's more work to do to shore up service:
"The MTA projects gaps of $295 million in 2027, $507 million in 2028, $707 million in 2029, and $897 million in 2030.
"These gaps have widened despite stronger than expected tax revenues and recent progress on savings initiatives."
.@MTA’s near term finances are stable, but there are growing budget gaps on the horizon. Increased savings, a focus on ridership growth through better service and working with labor can help avoid fiscal instability. Read my annual report on MTA’s financial outlook.

🚨 RIDERS FORCE AN END TO MTA'S EAGLE TEAMS
Here's what happened:
1) Last week, an MTA EAGLE team assaulted a rider in Brownsville over $3.00: gothamist.com/news/brooklyn-…
2) We released an op-ed with @thenyic calling for their immediate disbandment: nydailynews.com/2026/10/17/e…
3) Today, MTA announced the suspension of all EAGLE team activity on buses: gothamist.com/news/mta-suspe…

We commend @MTA for doing what's right in the wake of a senseless act of violence against the riding public at the hands of their EAGLE team officers.
It is our continued hope that this incident—neither unpredictable nor isolated within the context of punitive, broken-windows fare enforcement tactics—marks a definitive turning point in fostering a renewed relationship between taxpaying New Yorkers and the public services we depend on.
We urge city and state leaders to take this moment as their cue to negotiate a revenue package to deliver fast, free, and sustainably funded public transit, and look forward to working alongside our partners to fix the nation's slowest buses.

Why we fight/what we win:
"Following signal modernization, on-time performance on the 7 line jumped from 68% to 91%. On the E line in Queens, train speeds increased by approximately 10% following CBTC activation."

The MTA is proposing a new 125 Street Subway, which would extend west from the future 125 St/Lexington Av Q station. The project would connect existing subway lines—including the Second Avenue Subway—and bus routes along the corridor.
Learn more about this project at a public scoping meeting; we're hosting two virtual sessions on October 22, and one in-person session on October 27. Register for a session and get all the details: mta.info/project/125-street-…

"Rebuilding the BQE as a conventional highway would be more than an engineering decision. It would be a declaration that we remain unable—or unwilling—to imagine a different relationship between transportation and urban life.
"We should not accept that limitation."

There’s full retail occupancy at Union Square, sidewalks and public seating full of people in this video—I’m starting to think they might actually just love traffic.
Flatiron / Union Square looks pretty deserted.
This is what happens when streets meant for transportation are removed, people's transportation options are taken away, and neighborhoods get barricaded.

Two things *can* be true
Is there really a housing shortage? How much would market rate housing prices have to fall to help housing become affordable for the people who need help most? Housing scholars K. McClure & A. Schwartz tackle both questions. Th 10/22, 6pm, virtual & free: villagepreservation.org/even…

We must re-establish the train between NYC and the Catskills/Poconos. The rails are already there! The passenger runs continued through the 1960s, and the rails are still used for freight.
How far are you willing to go for your chance at the American Dream? Since the completion of I-80 in the 1970s, generations of New Yorkers have decamped to the Poconos, transforming a cluster of towns & enduring 3hr roundtrip commutes to their jobs in NYC. thecityreporter.nyc/2026/10/…

If you're used to American trains, even the rail systems that Europeans deride are incredible by comparison. Far from "awful." Including UK.
I had to get from London to Reading, 40 miles away. There's ~10 trains per hour and it takes 23 MINUTES.
The internet told them Europe was a social paradise. Turns out the trains are awful, the health care isn’t free, and people can be really mean. buff.ly/5cLtnha
