Mbappé Loses Chinese Sponsorships Over Mao Zedong “Dictator” Comment, China State TV Suspends La Liga Coverage Until Further Notice
French footballing superstar, Kylian Mbappé, has apologised for comments he made when asked what meme of him makes him laugh the most. Mbappé responded to the question with “when people put my face on a Chinese dictator [Mao Zedong]. I use it a lot with my friends online.”
Mao Zedong, modern China’s founding leader, ruled China from 1949 until his death in 1976.
Following his comments, Chinese brands Mengniu, Dongpeng, Shanghai Milkground Food Tech, and Eastroc Beverage have terminated their deals with Mbappé.
According to The Global Times, China Media Group (CMG), China's state broadcaster has ordered the suspension of broadcasts of LaLiga matches, all games featuring Mbappé, and advertisements endorsing Mbappé.
Mbappé released a statement in which he said, “My comment was ill judged, and I now understand that it hurt many people in China. I apologise to everyone my words have upset.”
LaLiga President Javier Tebas, released a statement on X saying “From LALIGA, we deeply regret the statements made by Kylian Mbappé that have caused discomfort and offense in China. We understand the harm caused and, on behalf of LALIGA, I wish to convey our sincere apologies to the Chinese people.”
The value of CMG’s latest broadcast deal with La Liga has not been disclosed, however, in 2015, the two parties signed a 5-year-deal worth areported US$81 million per year.

Incest isn’t part of the reasons?
Three generations of one family at Otjivize Village in the Epupa Constituency are living with the same undiagnosed medical condition, compounded by poverty, hunger and a lack of identification documents.
Fatima Shapondaka was born with the condition, which also affects her first-born daughter and her daughter’s first-born child.
The condition results in short lower legs and swollen knees and feet. This makes it difficult for them to walk, and they are paralysed.
The family’s hardship has forced one of Shapondaka’s daughters to leave school and become a full-time caregiver, while also fetching water from handmade wells and scoop holes and preparing food for the family.
Far from health facilities, Shapondaka says her granddaughter was born in the village because the family could not reach a hospital.
The family also struggles with hunger and remains unable to access assistance because they lack birth certificates.
Shapondaka is appealing to the relevant authorities for help with registration and support, hoping her family can finally access the assistance they desperately need.
