Kansas City has an opportunity to send a clear message today and demand better investment for our kids and our communities.
Say it loud and say yes to our kids ✅ and no to the jail tax ❌.

These numbers line up much closer to the figures that @DecarcerateKC and I calculated.
I appreciate the Mayor's admission that the City has been inflating the number of people in KCMO's jail system for Assault and Domestic Assault charges.

Here's a breakdown of who is in jail today.
It shows the contrast between assault *charges* vs *people with assault charges*.
You can get a number pretty close to the Mayor's screenshot if you're crafty with wording.

47 assault charges is not the same as 47 unique individuals incarcerated for assault.

This is what KCMO is actually jailing people for in 2025. This is important information for the upcoming election on April 8th to pay for a new City jail.
I worked on collecting and processing this data, so if you have any questions about this data, feel free to ask!
Replying to @DecarcerateKC
In KCMO municipal jail, assault only accounts for about 34% of *total* relevant charges that result in jail time daily. Trespassing, on the other hand, accounts for 66%.

Is the City being honest about what they're currently jailing people for? Or do they not know?
Either way, you should definitely vote NO!
Replying to @DecarcerateKC
Contrary to Rea and Lucas's claims, data shows that, on an average day in the municipal jail, only about 35-40% of those detained have been charged or sentenced for any type of assault.

More jails don’t equal more safety! 🚫 BlaqOut stands with @DecarcerateKC and over 20 local orgs in opposing the use of KC's public safety tax to fund a new detention center. Building more jails only expands a system that has historically harmed our communities.

.@KansasCity plans to ask for a continuation of public safety sales tax dollars to pay for a new jail next to the new @JacksonCountyMO Jail. As @fox4kc found out Thursday, that vote of the people could take place in April. @DecarcerateKC’s opposed. fox4kc.com/news/kansas-city-…

Kansas City does not need a new jail – especially one that costs $800 MILLION.
That's a lot of money that could be spent on healthcare, education, housing, & other community-based investments that actually make places safer.
