What people think cross examination sounds like:
P: you plunged the dagger into him, didn’t you?
D: I did. I did. I confess. I killed him.
What it actually sounds like:
P: turn to page 208 in your bundle; the last WhatsApp message dated 12.05.2009 please.
D: which page, sorry?

Possession of a Bladed Article – Crown Court.
The defence raised substantive issues and there were clear question marks over whether prosecution of this particular matter was in the public interest.
After two years of litigation and more than 14 hours of work, the prosecution offered no evidence on the day of trial.
Criminal legal aid fee: £272.55 (it would have been only £411.31 had the case proceeded to a one-day trial).
A good outcome for the defendant. Extremely poor remuneration – whether the case reaches trial or not – for the professionals who prepare these matters.
The Government now proposes to remove defendants’ right to elect Crown Court trial in cases of this kind. Instead they would face summary trial in the Magistrates’ Court, where the conviction rate is substantially higher.
Whichever way you look at it, justice in England & Wales continues to erode.

I'm a paramedic. We need a new emergency service specifically for dealing with mental heath issues. While paramedics like me have basic mental health training, we are still not in the best position to help these people. We try our best but we have too little resources and staff.

Yeah it's quite disastrous.
The risk is high and it'll ruin your actual job.
And, on top of that, frankly, team treat them like shit.
NPT and Investigations not so bad, but most don't even realise they can work on those.
More would probably help there if they did.

A ludicrous exercise from an organisation that is paid for by people who, despite its name, may not be uk taxpayers at all as they keep their names secret.
Worth checking this out from @the_tpa It’s hard working people who are picking up the tab for welfare.

I’m at Tory conference and had drinks with some local Labour mates who half joked that a Tory-Labour coalition would probably be better than either party accommodating with their extreme outliers in Ref/Res and Greens respectively.

Overlooked point about news that the overloaded magistrates' court will hear trials which should be in the Crown Court: a lot more people will not qualify for legal aid there, who'd have qualified for it in the Crown Court. Recipe for chaos and injustice

Charles is an extremely experienced old school court reporter who knows what he's talking about.
He's telling the truth here. The removal of the right to elect trial by jury and to automatically appeal any conviction in the magistrates' court is a dangerous proposal

Anyone who has spent any time observing magistrates’ courts knows this will undoubtedly result in a surge in miscarriages of justice.
The government has made a disgusting calculation that a certain quota of innocent people can and will be sacrificed in the pursuit of efficiency.
Ministers have scrapped plans that would have slashed the number of jury trials in England and Wales and replaced them with a judge sitting alone theguardian.com/law/2026/oct…
It will retain plans to take away the right of a defendant charged with an “either way” offence to elect jury trial in Crown Court, and for judge-only trials in some lengthy and technical fraud cases

Are you seriously saying the system see's male on male rape as a crime against women?

Hugely brave of Andy Carroll to go public with the details of how he was sexually assaulted by Kevin Adams in 2019.
If it can happen to a famous, wealthy, robust 6’4” professional footballer it can happen to men and boys who would be considered to be far more vulnerable.
Last year I called on the Government to stop classifying male-on-male crimes like these as “crimes considered to be violence against women and girls” and to create a strategy for tackling sexual violence and abuse against men and boys.
I hope Andy Carroll’s courage in speaking up can highlight how any man can become a victim.

Sometimes I honestly cannot believe the government is seriously proposing people could be convicted and sent to prison for TWO YEARS (two years?!?) by the Magistrates’ Court with the automatic right of appeal safeguard removed.
You read direct research like this 👇🏼 and shudder.
