A detailed description of PSSD is an essential aspect of informed consent
PSSD stands for post-SSRI sexual dysfunction. The name is a problem, because it hides the worst part of the condition.
I’ve now spoken with probably 20 to 30 people living with PSSD, and here’s what almost all of them tell me: the sexual dysfunction, horrific as it is, is not what they complain about most. It’s the emotional and cognitive effects. They describe it as a chemical lobotomy.
They hug their parents and feel nothing. They play the song from childhood that used to make the skin on the back of their neck tingle with nostalgia, and feel nothing. They describe being completely dissociated, watching their own life happen through a TV screen. Present, functioning, and sealed off from every feeling that made life worth living. Add the cognitive impairment, the fog, the dulled thinking, and you understand why they say the name undersells what happened to them.
This matters for two reasons. First, if you have these symptoms after an SSRI and never connected them to the drug, because nobody told you a “sexual side effect” could take your emotions too, now you have the full picture, and you’re not imagining it. Second, for anyone weighing these medications: the informed-consent conversation has to include this. Not just “some sexual side effects,” but the small risk of persistent emotional and cognitive disconnection that patients describe as losing themselves.

Nobody is ever prescribed one drug. They are prescribed the first one, and the rest arrive on their own.
You are not getting a statin. You are getting a statin, an anti-inflammatory for the legs it aches, a stomach tablet for the anti-inflammatory, and metformin for the blood sugar the statin's own label has warned about since 2012.
You are not getting an antidepressant. You are getting an SSRI, a sleeping tablet for the nights it wrecks, Viagra for the bedroom it switches off, and a second antidepressant when the first one is doubled and the doubling does nothing.
You are not getting a blood pressure tablet. You are getting amlodipine, a water tablet for the ankles it swells, a potassium tablet for the potassium the water tablet drains, and allopurinol for life for the gout the water tablet brings on.
You are not getting an acid tablet. You are getting omeprazole, B12 injections for the B12 it stops you absorbing, a magnesium tablet for the magnesium it flushes, and a bone drug for the hips its own label says it thins.
You are not getting metformin. You are getting metformin, more B12 for the B12 it strips, an anti-sickness tablet for the gut it upsets, and in time a second diabetes drug, because the plate it was meant to manage has never been mentioned.
You are not getting a weight loss jab. You are getting semaglutide, an anti-nausea tablet for the mornings, a laxative for the gut it stalls, a protein shake for the muscle it eats, and a gallbladder appointment.
Six first prescriptions. Twenty-four items on the repeat slip.
Not one of the twenty-four treats a cause. Every one treats the one above it, and the first one treated a number.

My conclusions after years of studying SSRI's:
1. The evidence shows SSRIs work primarily through expectancy effects (placebo response), while carrying significant risks of harm. The harms ARE significant & people are NOT informed of the risks.
2. Major studies used to justify SSRI prescribing have been exposed as fraudulent or fundamentally flawed.
3. Long-term outcomes are dramatically worse for medicated vs unmedicated patients.
4. The chemical imbalance theory has its roots in intelligence operations
5. Normal human emotions have been pathologized to expand the market for these drugs.
6. . The evidence reveals SSRIs as a failed paradigm causing significant societal harm. The foundation of evidence supporting their use has been exposed as corrupted, while long-term data shows they may create the chronicity they purport to treat.
There is an urgent need to reform mental health care away from this drug-centered approach and return to supporting human resilience and natural recovery.
