Ayurveda: The Ancient Hindu Science of Kajjala (Also Known as Eyeliner in the Western World) 👀 Kajjala originates entirely in ancient India as a medicinal formulation documented under the science of Anjana in classical Ayurvedic texts like the Sushruta Samhita. Far from being a mere cosmetic, it was created as a health treatment to cool the eyes, relieve strain, and protect vision from tropical heat. It was traditionally handcrafted by burning a cotton wick inside a clay or brass lamp filled with pure cow’s ghee or medicinal castor oil. A bronze plate or silver bowl placed above the flame captured the rich, pure carbon soot. This fine powder was then meticulously scraped off and blended with fresh ghee, organic oils, and cooling camphor. Long before it was adopted by other cultures, Kajjala was an indigenous daily ritual deeply rooted in Hindu wellness, science, and the preservation of health.
