2nd Battalion 8th Marines Activated 1 April 1940, 2/8 has seen combat across the globe over the years. In World War II, the battalion fought across the Pacific on Guadalcanal, in the first waves at Tarawa, to Saipan, and Tinian. Following World War 2 2/8 deployed repeatedly during the Cold War, responding to crises in Lebanon, Guantanamo Bay during the Cuban Missile Crisis, Grenada, and Lebanon again. - During the GWOT, 2/8 was busy! 2/8 took part in the 2003 invasion of Iraq, being heavily engaged during the battle of An Nasiriyah. The battalion returned for multiple combat deployments to Iraq between 2005-2008. - After the invasion of Iraq, 2/8 went to Afghanistan in November of 2003. They would find themselves in Afghanistan again in 2009, taking part in Operation Strike of the Sword, one of the largest Marine air assaults since Vietnam. 2/8 would go to Afghanistan again in 2011 and 2013.
