Do you think the buyer knows they could have purchased 13x ANSP public museums with that money

Officially, this is a hearing regarding “the announced closure of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University’s public museum, its consequences for Philadelphia, and options to preserve public access and the institution’s scientific and educational mission”.

If you submit this tweet as public comment to Philadelphia City Council you may see righteous fury never before experienced on this earth

A number that can apparently buy you 11.25x public-facing museum operations xitter.cf/Diplotomodon/status/21…
If you watch only one clip from the Philadelphia City Council hearing about the closure of the Academy of Natural Sciences, let it be this one. It — and I don't say this lightly — must be seen to be believed. #SaveTheAcademy

Drexel endowment is over a billion but there's probably rules on what money can go where. The endowment for ANSP is currently 80 million

You get to watch the committee chair realize in real time that the councilmembers' lives have been hell for the past seven weeks because Drexel was too scared to ask the city with a $7B budget for help over a six-figure deficit

The Philadelphia Eagles have not won a game since Drexel University closed the Academy of Natural Sciences. Do with this information what you will

"Drexel is financially responsible for the Academy, according to the September 2011 affiliation agreement between the two institutions, 'and shall cause sufficient funding to be made available to meet any operating deficits, liquidity needs, and budgeted capital improvements'"

While I was there I was just thinking to myself that the annual operational cost of the public portion of the museum is apparently less than the budget for fucking Fred: The Movie.

I can’t attend today’s hearing, but I stand with my Council colleagues and everyone fighting to save the Academy of Natural Sciences. The Academy is an invaluable asset, and it’s outrageous that Drexel University closed it so suddenly. As the Councilmember for Drexel’s main campus, I’m holding the university accountable and demanding that it live up to its responsibility to find a long-term solution that keeps the Academy open.

Today we’re getting answers about the future of the Academy of Natural Sciences. I will introduce a resolution this week to create a taskforce focused on keeping the museum open, supporting science education and protecting its role in our community. More to come!

Update to this story: per @thephillyvoice the City-selected lead for the Academy of Natural Sciences “transition” no-showed for a City Council hearing today because Drexel and the city are cowards.
Not reported here: the person tapped to temporarily lead this was the CEO of the Please Touch Museum when its original Logan Square location was demolished.
