That's an important point, too, because it reminds me of the Hannya mask Yamato wore. The Hannya mask specifically represents a WOMAN transforming into a demon, which is reflects Yamato's struggle with her father and her identity as an "oni."
Narratively, it wasn't just some random scary mask. The fact that it specifically represents a woman is significant. It was a small prop that showed us Yamato's womanhood while symbolizing her struggle with her identity and the expectations imposed on her by her father.
