I decided to actually go to a Mensa meeting. I usually skip them. It was a very diverse group, several races, young and old, about even men and women. We seemed to have nothing in common. At the end of the meeting, we ate dinner. Every single person had steak.
"Limit red meat and salt for longevity "
For almost 5 years now I eat only eggs, red meat, cheese, and occasional kippers, liver, and salami, unlimited salt, age 72.
"It's genetics"
Father died at 69 ( despite limiting red meat and salt), grandfather 65
"You must take a lot of medications and on your last leg"
No meds. Doctor sees no need. 20 chinups and 50 pushups.
"You must be a little guy."
6'1 and 195 lbs
"Well, um, you see, um, uh..."
The recommendations are all flawed and corrupted by food and drug corp money
As I senior, I know this for a fact. I do whey protein powder because I just can't eat enough for my protein needs
Older muscle needs more protein at a meal to get the same building response as younger muscle. When the two were compared, older men needed about 1.7 times as much protein per kilogram of body weight before muscle building reached its peak.
This is part of why people lose muscle with age even when they think they're eating enough, because a serving that works fine for a younger person can fall short for an older one.
After about 60, I'd aim for a generous serving of protein at every meal, roughly 30 to 40 grams for most adults, and I'd pair it with lifting.
"Wow! You lost a lot of weight. And got buff, too. Lost fat and gain muscle at your age? How did you do it?"
"A carnivore diet and working out with free weights."
"Naw, that's not it."

It never was LDL
The idea that heart disease is simply a cholesterol problem has never fit the data well. In a registry of more than 136,000 hospitalizations for coronary disease, nearly half of patients had an LDL under 100 mg/dL on admission. This new NIH work points to the artery wall and the immune cells inside it, and that's where insulin matters, because chronically high insulin and glucose damage the vessel lining and drive inflammation. LDL is one number, but a person's insulin is the one I'd want to know first.
Do you really think the Amish are running a processing factory to extrude canola oil from rapeseed plants?
Actual study showed that being in a huge, colossal "calorie surplus" does not cause any weight gain if those additional calories come from protein.

Turns out Christina Applegate doesn't have MS and never has. She has had devastating health issues for decades, but no disease. Could it possibly be her vegan diet?
I never intended to lose the 35 lbs I did. I just wanted to feel well. I could barely walk. In and out of the hospital for tests, Drs stumped. I tried everything. I thought - what the hell- I tried carnivore. In days my energy surged. After 3 or 4 months I lost 35 lbs, gained 2 inches on my arms, strength, energy and stamina surged. I eat exactly the same amount of food, same foods, same times of day as I did 5 years ago. I lost 35 lbs the first few months, stable ever since (so calorie count is nonsense). The weight loss is a bonus. It was effortless and incidental. Sorry you weight loss "gurus" who do it for money. All you really need to do is eat the right food, and eat until full.
Our body utilizes ATP, not calories. No part of the human body can even recognize calories. If blood glucose from carbs exceed the immediate need, fat cells absorb triglycerides and body fat increases no matter what wonderful math you did on calories.
Top causes of death in USA: heart disease and cancer. Top causes of death among the Maasai: Malaria and Tuberculosis -- infectious diseases, not metabolic.
An American doctor flew to Kenya in the early 1960s to prove that a people living on milk, meat and blood would have the worst hearts on earth, and found 400 men without a sign of heart disease between them.
George Mann was a Vanderbilt professor who had helped set up the Framingham study, and he was not a crank. The theory of the day said that saturated fat raised cholesterol and cholesterol furred the arteries, and the Masai of the Rift Valley were the perfect test, because they ate almost nothing else. A warrior lived on milk, several litres of it a day, fresh or soured. He ate meat at feasts and on raids. When a bullock was needed and not to be killed, he opened a vein in its neck, drew off a gourd of blood, and drank that mixed with the milk. Vegetables were for women and the sick. By the arithmetic of the American Heart Association, the Masai should have been dropping on the plain.
Mann put them through the machines. He took blood from hundreds and ran electrocardiograms on 400 young and middle-aged men, and in all of them found no evidence whatsoever of heart disease. Their cholesterol came back at about half the figure of an American of the same age. He put them on a step test and a treadmill and recorded a fitness he could only describe as Olympic standard: men who walked 20 miles a day behind cattle and would run alongside a vehicle for the fun of it.
He went back and did the hard part. In 1972 he published autopsies on 50 Masai, and here is where the honest reader has to sit still, because it is the detail that makes the story. Their aortas showed atherosclerosis, plenty of it, lipid and fibrous change the whole length. And their coronary arteries were wide, far wider than an American's, and in none of the hearts was there a trace of a blockage, a scar or an infarct. They had the plaque and not the disease. The pipe had grown with the load. Whatever killed a Masai, and plenty did, it was not his milk.
Mann came home a heretic and spent the rest of his career saying so in the journals, loudly, and the journals stopped printing him.
The belief he had gone out to confirm is the belief still printed on the tub: that the fat of the animal is what stops a human heart. He took the best instruments of his age to the people who ate more of it than anyone alive, and the instruments said no, and the people were the fittest he had ever measured. The response of his profession was to find other populations.
Four hundred men, half a doctor's expected cholesterol, zero disease, and a blood-and-milk breakfast. The science has had 60 years to answer that and has preferred to change the subject.
Calories are a measure of heat and absolutely nothing else. The idea of counting calories has failed for generations. Eat nothing but 2000 calories of chocolate cake every day and I guarantee you will gain body fat. Eat nothing but 2000 calories of red meat every day and I guarantee you will lose body fat. Try it and see for yourself.
