“Gentlemen, I want to show you how a Confederate soldier dies.” This is John Nichols. 22 years old. He is seated in leg irons attached to a ball and chain. A guard’s leg and revolver are visible at the edge of the frame. He was born in Kentucky in 1841 and raised in Pettis County, Missouri. During the Civil War, Nichols and partner James Johnson ran one of the smallest guerrilla bands in the region. Through late 1862 and early 1863 they robbed isolated farms and travelers in Johnson, Pettis, and Henry counties. Union authorities in Sedalia issued a shoot-on-sight order against them. Nichols was captured in Morgan County on April 25, 1863. A military commission tried him at Jefferson City that June. Witnesses described him as “a guerrilla and a highway robber” and “a terror to that county more than any other living man.” One man testified that Nichols had taken him prisoner, threatened to kill him with buckshot, then robbed him of $100 and his horse after he fled. The sentence of death was reviewed and approved by Missouri Governor Hamilton Gamble and President Lincoln. He attempted to escape and was wounded by a guard. On October 30, 1863, he was taken from the guardhouse in a wagon, seated on his own coffin, dressed in a white shroud with his arms pinioned. Four companies of Wisconsin infantry and a troop of cavalry escorted him to a gallows set in a ravine a mile outside Jefferson City. He placed the noose around his own neck and told the crowd, “Gentlemen, I want to show you how a Confederate soldier dies.” A priest told him to hush. Nichols replied, “Go away, I mean what I say.” His last words were: “Yes, I have shot at soldiers and they have shot at me. I have threatened people, and people have threatened me.” He was the first bushwhacker hanged in Missouri by sentence of a military court. Image from Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield; WICR 30211

This is what ice formation looks like on a Turbo Commander 840 at a high altitude. Watch how the wing leading edge, propeller, and windshield anti-ice systems break up the ice.

11/3 @ 6:30PM: Heavy rainfall is occurring with a band of showers and thunderstorms across Miramar, Pembroke Pines, Southwest Ranches, and Davie. With grounds already saturated, ponding of water on roadways is likely ongoing. Drive carefully!

This is what happens when a set of steel balls, pure good intentions, and a brain completely melted by TikTok all share one body. You get a Cuban Tarzan with a death wish and a three-foot iguana. 😶 I respect this smoothbrain swamp ninja more than most people who post about “helping the environment.” He is actively removing invasive iguanas from a South Florida canal instead of just complaining about them online. That part is legitimate. The execution is where the brain cells clearly signed off for the day. 🧠 He sees the lizard, takes a few steps, and full-sends himself into that ditch like a manatee that just got hit with a taser mid-migration. No stick. No net. No quick check for the other 47 things that live in Florida canals and have zero interest in his invasive species cleanup program. He just launches, hits the water, and comes up holding the iguana like he just won a prize at the fair... It is impressive in the same way it is impressive when someone tries to fist-fight a riding lawnmower. You have to respect the nerve. You also have to accept that one wrong move turns this from “local hero removes invasive lizard” into “local hero becomes local content for the neighborhood gator.” The canal did not care about his good intentions or his Salt Life shirt. Respect the mission. Question every single decision that led to the swan dive. Florida already has enough people treating every body of water like a slightly dirtier swimming pool. This guy is just the most committed version of that idea. 🦎🏆🤤
