I guess things didn't work out with Oregon so Illinois wanted a series with ND so the Illini slid into the sport the Irish were trying to fill.

I hear Illinois is a home and home? So Purdue initiated? I thought ND did to upgrade their soft ass schedule?

Purdue wanted out of the next 2 years games vs. Notre Dame. No doubt Oregon & ND had been talking and so Purdue wanting to "pause" things made it simple for both parties. Illinois is a home and home, which ND has traditionally schedules vs. Big Ten teams.

Make no mistake Purdue wanted out of its series against Notre Dame for obvious reasons. The current contract only had 2 games remaining - '27 and '28. When both years became available ND went out & scheduled Oregon & Illinois.

More manageable. No need to play Notre Dame these days with 9 Big Ten games on the schedule every season. Forever #Purdue has been one of only a couple, if that, #B1G schools to play 2 "real" games (against a Power 4 school and/or ND) in its nonconference schedule regularly.
