I can’t describe my happiness in finally seeing this paper out on @RevEconStudies. Most importantly, I want to express my gratitude to the many who have helped me during this journey of almost 9 years.
Patent term boosts long run innovation, but policy anticipation creates surprising, medium term dynamics: innovation rises before expected cuts and remains high due to spillovers.

How does funding uncertainty affect science? Every Oct, we get headlines bemoaning the impact of the federal budgeting process on science. Does it matter that grant $$ takes a bit longer to get out the door, or is it just a nuisance we can deal with?

What is the state of academic science?
It’s hard to tell with so many unobservables… so, we ran a big survey at ~150 US institutions to generate new findings about professors and their research.
Our first draft is out with 7 key (preliminary) results using this new data:

*** Continuation of an academic debate
I agree with @ojblanchard1 that price-level determination is at the core of monetary policy and short-run macro. Especially because it is fundamentally different from price-theory classical micro where the price level is indeterminate.
🧵
1. Triggered by the exchange with @R2Rsquared @AngelUbide, @Guido_Lorenzoni and others: The discussion was at the core of macro. The nature of the determinants of the price level is THE fundamental issue in thinking about short run fluctuations, not a marginal or esoteric issue.
Very excited to be in Cartagena for @SEDmeeting, hearing from great researchers and presenting new work with @drewkoke on “Capital Replacement and Innovation Dynamics” at the Innovation session, June 29 2.45pm room 10! See you there!
