So you saw You Can See Everything and you’re in the mood for another bleedingly postmodern story where there’s a second act swerve and the main character is angered and mirrored by people who have seen a distorted telling of his life?
Have I got a book for you!

I would like to see an article profiling the buyers who CAN afford the house.
There are a lot of people out there who are supporting current price levels by buying the houses at these prices.
This would be more interesting that saying "no one" can afford a house.
I'm in my 40s. I'm a lawyer. My wife is a lawyer. We both work full time.
We cannot afford the house my parents purchased on a single electrician's income in their 30s.
We cannot afford the house my immigrant grandparents purchased on a single MTA bus driver's salary in their 30s. They had SIX CHILDREN.
For 30 years, politicians in Washington & their oligarch allies convinced regular people that this was just about avocado toast and fancy coffee.
In reality, this is end-stage capitalism. Everyone is stuck in place. It's impossible to buy a home. It's too costly to move. We work too much to have passion projects. We don't have enough savings to start our own businesses. We can't afford to go without healthcare to do it.
Thanks for writing this article @troy_closson. Would be very happy to discuss further.

One thing that kind of amazes me is how many loyal alumni, including some of the most powerful people in America, reflexively leap to defend higher education while gliding over a pretty important fact:
Higher education is one of the biggest and most successful industries in American history. But they talk about it as if it isn’t a little weird to say, “Hey, please leave that poor little super powerful mega corporation alone! I was a customer!” or “I’m a current employee!”

But you need near-100% backup when no sun or wind, paying for two systems

Sunday evening parenting thought:
If you're a parent with young kids, and you're not feeling precious moments of joyful delight at the awesome cuteness, competence, or charisma of your kids, at least a few times a day, then either
1) You're not paying enough close, sustained, deliberate attention to your kids when they're playing happily and learning new things, and/or
2) You haven't learned enough about the sublime, dizzying scientific complexity of how your kids are growing -- the whole infrastructure of genetics, biochemistry, neurophysiology, and cognitive development -- that has been transforming your kids from single fertilized eggs into new conscious beings in their own right, with their own beliefs, desires, goals, passions, and quirks.
Mindful engagement with kids, plus scientific understanding of child development, makes parenting hugely more rewarding.

Today, I learned that Australia is a land mass that broke off of Antarctica.
As a result, it didn't have robust fauna or earthworm ecosystems, so it doesn't have millions of years of soil compaction.
That's why all of it's lifeforms are venomous. 🧵
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Australia has ~1,000 native earthworm species despite splitting from Antarctica. Venom in snakes (not "all" lifeforms) stems from elapid radiation in isolation, not soil/earthworms (australian.museum/learn/animals/… discoverwildlife.com/animal-facts/w…).

There has been a lot of talk about "lazy smart" people recently.
They are basically just people who get much more pleasure from leisure than "you" do, and get much less pleasure from consumption and purchasing things.
Different hedonic wiring.

The factoid that '50% of marriages end in divorce' was kinda true decades ago.
But the divorce rate peaked in 1980.
Now, less than 40% of all marriages since 2000 end in divorce.
For college graduates, it's under 30%.
For college graduates who get married after age 25, and who don't have any kids before marriage, it's under 20%.
Anybody promoting the outdated, deceptive 50% rate has some kind of anti-marriage or anti-natalist agenda.
It scares young people away from getting married and having kids. That is their goal.

Great piece on a great comic by @BDSixsmith:
“Without ever being didactic, and while maintaining a thin pretence of being a know-nothing, Norm hid philosophical depths beneath his comedy. ‘I remember a psychiatrist telling me I gamble to escape the reality of life,’ he once joked. ‘But I told him, ‘That’s why anyone does anything’.” @amconmag theamericanconservative.com/…
What do you think @wrathofgnon ?
Real?
My coworker spent one year in Tennessee.
He came back to Tokyo two months ago.
He is not the same man.
He says "y'all" in meetings. To our boss.
He holds the door for the entire floor. Twelve people. Every morning.
He asked the convenience store clerk how her day was going. She had to sit down.
He calls every man "bud." Including the CEO.
He refuses to describe anything under three hours away as "far."
He waves at drivers who let him cross. One driver waved back and almost hit a pole.
Last week, he told a junior employee, "I'm proud of you."
She went to the restroom and cried for ten minutes.
We thought it would wear off.
It didn't. It's spreading.
Three people in accounting now say "y'all."
The junior employee holds the door.
The convenience store clerk asks HIM how his day is going.
Tennessee, I don't know what you did to him.
Please do it to the rest of us.

This is an extraordinary advertisement because it's effectively spending 60 seconds to tell us how technology is ruining our lives.
