Chat with @edcoper didn't go as planned. He calls me a grifter and regrets coming on the podcast. We discuss the new digital duty of care bill. We do end up discussing his book about rage bait and algorithms.... 🤔

It might seem ironic, even provocative, to post this brilliant discussion here, on angertainment’s home ground, but I highly recommend it. podcasts.apple.com/au/podcas…

🧠 “Truth is not really that important to us as a species. There are things way more important than truth ... getting along is the primary one. If we have to call black white in order to get along we so readily do."
On Curtin’s Cast, author and campaign strategist @EdCoper explains why tribal identity often matters more than facts. From the endless arguments over the crowd size at Donald Trump’s 2025 inauguration to the way social media rewards outrage, Ed argues that “the tribal answer” frequently becomes more important than the truthful one.
Why are humans wired this way? And what does it mean for democracy in the age of angertainment?

The alarm bell I am ringing in today's @smh: social licence on renewables cannot be taken for granted. Incredibly, the anti-renewables movement has outspent the federal Liberal Party account this election on social media ads.

So we've put in a pitch for a podcast session at SXSW this year - but we need votes!
We're doing it with friend of the podcast @edcoper and it will be great. I hope they let me bring some CBCo tins - it better not just be instant coffee and sadness!

News from Tesla: we are leaving the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries and resigning from its board. The FCAI has repeatedly made claims about new vehicle efficiency standards that are demonstrably false. We can't stand by that. Here's the letter. drive.google.com/file/d/1OPQ…

A cautionary important thread on how the culture war mongers do their work.
The last week shows how Peter Dutton plans to win the next election, assisted by media who moonlight as the LNP PR machine, working in unison with a conservative lobby group funded by billionaires.

Great to see more focus on the background causes - we obsess about the fact a piece of misinformation is false, hence the rush to correct it as the solution, not the root causes that led it to be effective
New essay: I argue that misinformation is often better viewed as a symptom of deep societal problems rather than their cause. When that’s true, interventions like debunking and censorship are unlikely to help – and might make things worse. (1/15)

I spoke to @SatPaper about the biggest danger facing Australia right now: the wholesale import and weaponisation of the #MAGA playbook. “If you think this was about the specific issue of the referendum, you’re missing the point.”
Tony Abbott is on its advisory board and Jacinta Nampijinpa Price worked as its spokesperson before entering parliament.
