Google's new /goto: +2 s per URL Open all links of a fresh SERP at once: the ones redirect, then each one hits a "Verifying your request" page, 2 s longer each time (3 s, 5 s, 7 s… 83 s for the 51st) Wait ~3 min after the SERP and they all resolve at once

Another example of the dash in the title breaking AI Overviews (“User”)
I’ve been seeing this a lot lately: hyphens ( - ) appear to be breaking AI Overview titles 😅 Shop the new Ray Introducing Ray (They’re both missing -Ban) 😅

so, ChatGPT released sample code for their web crawler. Guess what, it completley strips out all Schema. So let's put that myth to bed. H/T no twitter having Rodrigo Stockebrand for this github.com/openai/gpt-oss/bl…

AI is killing SEO traffic is not completely wrong, but definitely not completely right. I a new analysis of Similarweb data (10k domains, US + France, 3 years), I found Organic Search fell -13.2% in the US and 24.4% in France over the last 2 years. HOWEVER, not all of that is due to AI (Overviews). Paid Search has grown strongly over the same time horizon, probably due to more real estate in the SERPs and harder differentiation from organic results. Also, organic traffic losses are more concentrated in industries like publishing, which lost lost 41.5% in the US and 42.5% in France over the last 2 years. Lastly, Google's updates are aggressive and often reduce rank performance that can be, at least somewhat, recovered. So, as much as I see AI reducing clicks left and right, we should not throw the baby out with the bath water. Full analysis in the new Growth Memo.

My esteemed industry colleagues @Kevin_Indig, @Marie_Haynes, and Ben Foster (from @seoworks) all published studies this week (and @RandFish amplified them). The four parties landed on the same conclusion: AI search doesn’t send traffic, so stop worrying about it. They’re right about the first part. I believe they’re wrong about everything that follows from it. Kevin has said on stage that AI is a visibility play and not a traffic play. Marie’s own data shows ChatGPT referrals falling while ChatGPT’s audience tripled, which has a very different explanation than the one she gave it. And Rand has a book coming out called Zero Click Marketing. Grading AI search on referral traffic is how you end up telling a CMO that the place where a billion people a week ask what to buy is a distraction. Nobody has ever attributed a billboard. The industry that spent twenty years tying every dollar to a click is now the only part of marketing that can’t recognize a brand channel when it’s staring at one. Helpful post by @sistrix on how they are approaching the rank tracking situation: “What we’re doing: Our quality checks detected the divergent results early on. Since then, we have only published results that have additionally passed multiple checks. If a new result fails the check, we collect the keyword again until a verified result is available. This takes time, which is why some keywords are currently updated less frequently.” sistrix.com/support/google-r…

I’ve noticed this a few times lately: AI Overview citations appear to be dropping letters and words followed by - But it’s inconsistent when and why this happens… like this T in E-E-A-T 🫠 @Marie_Haynes

Agent checkout approved. Eager to hear how this goes :) -> Shopify announced that browser-based AI agents can now complete purchases on Shopify merchant sites via WebMCP "Shopify previously supported WebMCP for its storefronts and carts, allowing browser-based AI agents to comb through a Shopify retailer’s inventory, search for products, and add them to a cart. The addition of WebMCP support for checkout, including Shop Pay, means these agents can now read the checkout screen, update it, and submit the transaction with the buyer’s authorization, without relying on screenshots or scraping web pages, the company said." techcrunch.com/2026/09/28/sh…

I just checked a dozen unrelated terms in Google Trends (US, past 12 months) and every single one showed the same #1 region: Wyoming (The least populated state in the U.S.) Drill down, and it's all coming from Cheyenne - a town of 67K. Even if Google Trends normalizes by a region's total search volume, not by population... that wouldn't explain why Cheyenne, Wyoming leads in search demand for *every query* I checked. Unless Google Trends data is inaccurate? Cheyenne, Wyoming also happens to be a data center hub (link in comments). So perhaps the explanation might be that a lot of non-human traffic is coming from that location? Which would line up with something I've been wondering about for the past year: how much of the unusual spikes in search volume we've been seeing in Google Trends (the "SEO" surge over the past year, for example) is actually coming from real humans. Try it yourself: check any term in Google Trends in the US for the past 12 months. Curious whether you get Wyoming too.

Looks like it dates back to June 2026 (dated late May 2026), before the August spam update and now September spam update. It's Google’s second system identified in 2026 designed to catch AI slop -> Google Has Deployed A New AI Spam Detector Called SAFE "Google has published a research paper about detecting spam that mimics a human manual review that catches content that violates the “spirit” of policy violations and platform guidelines. The system is called Scaled Abuse Forensics Examiner (SAFE) and it is expressly designed to identify AI-generated content." "The paper says SAFE identifies “spirit of policy” violations primarily with a few-shot-trained LLM. The goal of SAFE is to catch content that may not match an existing rule or known violation pattern but still violates the intent of the policy or platform guideline and can go undetected by traditional classifiers and fine-tuned violation-detection models." searchenginejournal.com/goog… via @martinibuster
