In 2018, Ubisoft welcomed us into the startup program of its Strategic Innovation Lab. Almost nobody in gaming knew what a blockchain was.
The bad reputation came later, once things launched. Players saw a scam, and with all the get-rich-quick schemes around, that was understandable.
Behind the noise, many projects were built on a different idea: players should own their digital assets instead of renting them forever. Ubisoft dug early, and kept digging when it became unpopular.
Not everything worked out as hoped. But for a company that size, going first was a real risk, taken with courage.
Nicolas Pouard led that initiative with a view of the world that is anything but consumerist.
