It’s a little known fact that all the words associated with paying to see the Bayeux Tapestry are derived from Anglo-Saxon while all the words for being invited to see it by a corporate sponsor derive from French.
The Bayeux Tapestry has sparked a class war in England. Brits who want to see the 11th-century relic say they’re being treated like Taylor Swift fans on Ticketmaster, while American billionaires, luxury hotel guests, and museum sponsors jump the queue. wsj.com/world/uk/bayeux-tape…

Really bad feeling about the threat from Russia. Britain - isolated, unprepared, grandstanding - is the obvious target for a calibrated attack. The “Iranian” cyber attacks were probably probing.
What is coming will be big enough to really hurt, small enough to probably not trigger article 5. The real danger we feel compelled to respond for reasons of face. Then things could spiral.

Let's be clear: the underlying logics of European integration and of American annexationism are one and the same. Canadians cannot wish for the UK to subsume its sovereignty without adopting the same logic which would end Canadian nationhood.

the idea that it is "impossible" for black people to get ahead except by emitting an endless stream of self-aggrandizing lies is probably the most racist thing I'll read on x this week
The tragic death of Professor Jason Arday forces us to confront the impossible standards placed on Black people and their devastating consequences.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The Telegraph identified more than 100 examples of identical or near identical wording between a Paula Zwozdiak-Myers thesis and Jason Arday's thesis. Avoiding plagiarism is a minimum standard, not an impossible standard, for academics.

Thinking about Deborah Orr today. I wonder what she would have made of this sudden interest from Will Self in other people’s mental health.

Really really nervous that we appear to be tearing up all guidance on reporting around suicide. One of most dangerous tropes we can promulgate is that death will allow people to repent and see error, allowing deceased to be reframed as heroic and set family free

Jolyon Maugham is perhaps the finest inadvertent sitcom character the UK has created. I can’t wait to write a scene in which a white guy gives a speech containing the words: “It’s a day for white people to listen and not to speak!”

Maugham is genuinely deranged. Actually disturbing to watch. Maugham is one of the main actors responsible for fanning the flames of the Arday scandal & keeping the story in the media. For benefit of his own publicity & fundraising.

After Jolyon Maugham of the Good Law Project erupted at a BBC anchor for asking whether the GLP was fundraising off its petition for the government to crack down on the media over Jason Arday’s death, the organization quietly removed the donate button from the petition page. Maugham had dressed down the anchor for daring to ask such a question which he insisted was based on false assumptions. It would appear that this claim was false.

Anyway, here’s the relevant part of the interview. Anyone can read this thread, listen to this clip, and then judge for themselves

The people who enabled Jason Arday’s lies will blame the people who exposed them.

Because he was made a Professor at an elite university for the colour of his skin, rather than his ability. He was clearly very unwell.
Rather than never being put in this position in the first place, or helped and supported to back slowly away, he was encouraged to 'fight' to swell the coffers of the Good Law Project and Carter Ruck, and thus increased the scrutiny upon him 100 fold.
He was then left with no support and he killed himself.
I suggest the public interest in this is and should be massive. It is a failure of colossal proportions in so many areas.

– abolish Ofsted inspections or else headteachers might kill themselves
– let children permanently mutilate themselves or else they might kill themselves
– don't expose fraudsters or else they might kill themselves
Manipulative logic that we must reject utterly.

People on Twitter suddenly realising that vast swathes of academic writing are meaningless guff reminds me of the recent exposure of poor food standards at kebab factories. If you’ve ever read an academic paper/eaten a kebab it’s the least shocking scandal ever

Think Rod Liddle, one of the great rattlers, might appreciate the number of Bluesky prigs whose carefully crafted insults have achieved precisely one like.

The fun part is that *all* the people who were taken in by this guy have spent the last decade telling the public they were taken in by a red bus and were too stupid to decide who governs them.
The question that progressive Britain dare not ask itself at the end of this week:
"How many Jason Arday fakes have we churned out over the past few decades?"
1,000, 10,000, 100,000s?
We know Lammy is definitely another, but just how many more have been allowed to infiltrate an academia with literally no standards anymore?
