Imagine building a travel business without a working travel app. Just WhatsApp, DMs and people willing to book. That is how @Namanya_bryan started building Tubayo. He turned social media conversations into travel bookings, then went on to build a marketplace business that brought together hundreds of vendors. At its peak, @Tubayomarketday generated up to $20,000 in monthly revenue. But Brian eventually shut it down to pursue a bigger technology ambition. Why walk away from something that was making money? We get into the business decisions, financial setbacks and ambition behind Tubayo in this Uganda edition episode.

𝑾𝒉𝒚 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒔𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅 𝒉𝒊𝒓𝒆 𝒑𝒆𝒐𝒑𝒍𝒆 𝒘𝒉𝒐 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒖𝒏𝒂𝒇𝒓𝒂𝒊𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒆𝒍𝒍 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒘𝒓𝒐𝒏𝒈. In his 1 November 2026 Financially Incorrect interview, Scanad founder Bharat Thakrar offered a candid test for founder-led companies: if your senior team never tells you that your idea will fail, you have hired the wrong people. Thakrar never went to university after finishing his A-levels, and he compensated for that gap by systematically recruiting executives with academic and technical pedigrees he did not possess. When he travelled to India to hire one account lead for Coca-Cola and Unilever, he met three standout MBA graduates, including an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, and hired all three on the spot. On the creative side, he brought in leaders like Cambridge-educated master's graduate Mark Fidelo. Thakrar’s hiring rule was designed to protect the agency from his own blind spots. When a founder hires people who are smarter and better qualified than the boss, two things happen inside the boardroom. First, those executives are not intimidated by the founder's authority, so they will lay out exactly why a proposed move is a mistake. Second, because the founder already believes those hires are more qualified on the technical details, the founder actually listens. Admitting that he could not write a formal strategy deck to save his life and would take ten slides to say what his strategist could capture in three, Thakrar restricted his own role to client relationships, looking ahead, and motivating his team without micromanaging or berating them Watch full interview: youtu.be/o6QHxSx59K0?si=p2iC…

A credit card can be a financial tool or an expensive lesson in self control. The difference? How you use it. At One Night Only Brunch, we took the credit card conversation to the crowd. Beyond having one, how much do people actually understand about the facility, the repayment terms and what they're signing up for? Because access to credit is one thing. Knowing how to manage it is another. @StanbicKE #TheStanbicExperience #LiveJoyfully #KeepGrowingKE

A team that never challenges the boss might be a bigger problem than you think. @bharatthakrar deliberately hired people he considered smarter than himself. He wanted people confident enough to disagree, qualified enough to offer better solutions and empowered enough to take responsibility without waiting for him to direct every move. He started with KES 11,000. Four decades later, Scanad had become a listed Pan African company valued at KES 9 billion at its height. But the interesting part of this story is how @bharatthakrar built it. From creating separate agencies to navigate client exclusivity, to taking over McCann's Kenyan business in 24 hours and winning an Airtel mandate across 18 countries, Bharat Thakrar made some unconventional decisions along the way. Then came another side of building a business at that scale: partnerships, ownership, governance and the question of who gets to shape the company's future. What would he negotiate differently today? 🎧 Full episode Live now on YouTube and all audio streaming platforms.

Why pay yourself a huge salary when you could structure your rewards around the growth of the business? @KevinMutiso says he got lost in the startup salary culture while building his first company. At Oye, he's taken a different approach: a modest salary and additional equity when the business hits specific milestones. Would you rather take home more money every month or own a bigger piece of a more valuable business? Watch📽️Full Episode on Youtube , stream audio🎧 on all platforms.

You can have the technology. You can have the banking partner. You can even have the letter of offer. But until the money is drawn down, how secure is the deal? For @KevinMutiso , March 2020 answered that question the hard way. COVID hit, Equity Bank rescinded its undrawn offer, and the funding pipeline Alternative Circle was counting on disappeared. The business was left exposed. So was Kevin. Watch📽️Full Episode on Youtube , stream audio🎧 on all platforms.

At 19, @KevinMutiso was managing investments for some of Kenya's top CEOs. He bought Kenya Airways shares while in Form 2. Later, he raised $1 million to build a fintech. But there was a point in his entrepreneurial journey when he couldn't afford KES 500 for transport to a meeting. What happened between those two realities? A lending business challenged by fraud, a potential KES 200 million banking facility that fell through, personal assets sold and a complete rethink of what it means to build a business. Today, he's building Oye around Kenya's boda boda economy, with a vision that could see riders become shareholders. 🎧 Full episode Live now on YouTube and all audio streaming platforms.

Be honest. When you budget for a night out, are you budgeting for the night you planned or the night that might happen? We put this question to the One Night Only Brunch Edition crowd ahead of NE-YO's performance. Some came with firm spending limits, Some had their Wives as Financial advisors and Others had found ways to keep costs down. A few were happy to let the evening determine the damage. Turns out, the plan for your money can be just as entertaining as the plan for your night. #TheStanbicExperience #LiveJoyfully #KeepGrowingKE
